About the Author
James R. Evans is professor in the Department of Operations, Business Analytics, and Information Systems in the Lindner College of Business at the University of Cincinnati. His service includes president of the Decision Sciences Institute 1997-1998 and 11 years on the Board of Examiners and Panel of Judges for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. He has been Editor of the Quality Management Journal, published by the American Society for Quality, and served on editorial boards of numerous other journals. Dr. Evans has published more than 90 refereed papers and more than 30 editions of books. During the annual Quality Congress in May 2004, The American Society for Quality presented Dr. Evans and co-author Bill Lindsay with the Philip B. Crosby Medal for writing THE MANAGEMENT AND CONTROL OF QUALITY, 6E. The Crosby medal was presented "for authoring a distinguished book contributing significantly to the extension of the philosophy and application of the principles, methods, and techniques of quality management."

William M. Lindsay is Professor Emeritus of Management at Northern Kentucky University. He received a BSIE from the Georgia Institute of Technology, MS in Engineering from the University of Cincinnati, and an MBA and Ph.D. from Georgia State University. In addition to coauthoring eight editions of MANAGING FOR QUALITY AND PERFORMANCE EXCELLENCE (including predecessors), he is the coauthor of Total Quality and Organization Development. He served as an examiner for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award for four years, as a judge for the Kentucky Quality Award for five years, and as a judge for the Seasongood Innovation Awards for the City of Cincinnati for three years. He is a senior member and past President of the Cincinnati Chapter of the Institute of Industrial Engineers, past President of the Cincinnati Chapter of the Association for Quality and Participation, and is a member of the American Society for Quality (ASQ), in addition to other professional organizations. He continues to teach MBA courses in quality management and project management. He is currently a Board Member of CLASP, a local nonprofit after-school program for elementary-aged children, and is an active volunteer at his church.

A Great Textbook--Thumbs up!

After reading this book, and studying the various applications used in the study of statistical analysis of quality control; it has facilitated my understanding of the subject beyond my horizon. I highly recommend this textbook for students as well as those who value the importance in the management of quality control.

AWESOME

This book just arrived and I expected a beat up abused text because they noted the condition as just GOOD. This book is in amazing beautiful clean almost pristine condition. Now, I want to get all my books from these people. Now...to review the text book. Weeellllll, it's a textbook. Yuck. BLAH...hard work ahead. I can't compare it to previous editions because I don't have them. It's smaller in size which I really like. Smaller generally means less to carry weight wise and less space consuming in my bag so that's good. Now there are a couple days of freedom before class starts so we will see what goes with the bold then!!

Disappointed by lack of information

This "custom edition" should have been referenced as an abridged edition. It is NOT the full reader and so is mostly useless for my son's class. I suppose I should have guessed that custom = abridged, but since there is a "Brief" edition, I assumed that this just had Tulsa CC all over it. Since this book is out of print, getting the right edition is crucial. Now my son is behind in his reading, I'm out my money, and all because the information was not explicit. The info I needed was right on the flyleaf!

I'm sure this edition is useful for people who don't really care about having the full edition, but it's not much good to me.

Very few of the readings needed for class found in the printed edition were in the kindle edition. Unless your professor explicitly states that you can use the Brief edition DO NOT BUY!

Ultimate Eye-Candy for quilters

I love, love, love this book! It's been on my wish list for a long time, waiting for me to justify the price, but now that I have it I wish I'd splurged years ago, as it is worth every penny and more. I have spent hours paging through, drooling over the photos, and dreaming of what I might do with these patterns (er, just as soon as I finish up a few things in the UFO pile).

My husband, who is no more attuned to the finer points of quilting and interior decor than most guys, grabbed this from the kitchen table and sat down with it, saying, "Wow. Why don't you make something like this for our house?"

It's unlikely I will follow any of these patterns exactly, as I buy quilting books for inspiration rather than specific patterns, but based on these patterns I have begun to plan something spectacular for the front hall. Probably it will be years before it's done, at the rate I finish things (um, that UFO pile?). However, I expect to enjoy many more pleasant hours indulging in the pages of this book throughout that time. Even if I never get around to making anything from it, it will remain among my fave quilt books forever.

Everything about this book is terrific: not just the quilts themselves, but the photography, layout, discussion, and instructions are all very well done. Excellent.

I don't like it because ...

I bought this book with great hope. I have spent the past 12 odd years of my career working on various networking protocols. But, I had never worked on network management systems. I figured I could use a good book about network management. Looking at the TOC and the author's info (the author teaches at GaTech), I figured I wouldn't go wrong if I read this book.

The author definitely covers a lot of ground. The emphasis is squarely on SNMP based systems. The author also has some decent discussion about EMS/NMS, event-correlation, commercial and open-source management systems, etc.

So, why am I giving it 2*-s? I didn't like the book because it is very hard to read. The sentences are very difficult to read and understand. You have to make a big effort to figure out what the author is saying and even then, it's not easy. I am hoping the author and the editors simplify the language of the book and update some of the content in the next edition. So, my suggestion would be: wait till the next edition if you can, else, be ready to put in a lot of time into reading this book.

For folks serious about learning network security

I purchased this book as part of the required reading for an Information Security class at UCLA. From the start the book was full of very technical and detailed information. Having little practical network experience, my first reading focused on grasping the low-hanging fruit. As I read the book a second and third time I picked up some serious knowledge. It seemed like everytime I re-read a chapter there was more there to glean. I'm now studying for the CISSP and CISA. My initial cold self-assessments returned scores in the 80%-100% range. That's without CISSP/CISA-specific studying. I attribute most of that knowledge to this book. This was money well spent!
