Great recipes

If you are on the 21-day fix you know only too well just how hard it is to find recipes that contain food from the approved ingredients list as well as correct container counts. Lately, I have been cooking from a standard cookbook and then spending AGES trying to add everything up. So as soon as I stumbled across this book, I knew I had to get it.

So far I have already made the 5-minute chocolate pecan brownies and the baked zucchini, turkey bacon and tomato frittata and I must say that I am very impressed so far! Tomorrow I will be trying out the chocolate avocado mousse and the breadless burgers and I hope they turn out just as good. The fact that all of the recipes appear to be gluten free is also a major bonus for me personally.

Overall, I am very happy with the book and hope to see more from the author.

This is a "coach" trying to make money off the ideas of someone who designed this plan. You can get all these and more by reading the plan, purchasing the book, and/or figuring it out yourself.......btw.....all of these are available for free online through beach body and Pinterest. shame on this person

Happy I bought this.

This is a pretty good book. It gave me some great ideas and included the cup counts which is won-der-ful (since I'm too lazy to figure things out myself and end up eating boring food as a result!). It's very simple. It would be better with photos, of course, but for less than $5 at a time when I needed 21DF ideas, it was perfect! Recipes are easy to follow and ingredients mostly easy to find.

About the Author

Curt Bartol earned a PhD in Personality/Social Psychology from Northern Illinois University. He was then a psychology professor for over 30 years, teaching a wide array of both graduate and undergraduate courses, including Criminal Behavior, Biopsychology, Social Psychology, Introduction to Forensic Psychology, Juvenile Delinquency, and Psychology and Law. He was instrumental in creating and launching a Master’s Program in Forensic Psychology at Castleton State College (now Castleton University) and served as its director for six years. He is a licensed clinical psychologist who has offered psychological services to local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies and public safety offices for over 35 years. He was editor of the scholarly journal Criminal Justice and Behavior for 17 years.   

 

Anne Bartol earned an M.A. in Journalism from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and an M.A. and PhD in Criminal Justice from the State University of New York at Albany. Over a 20-year college teaching career she taught criminal justice, sociology, and journalism courses, including Criminology, Juvenile Justice, Corrections, Women and Criminal Justice, Occupational Crime, and Media Law. She was managing editor of Criminal Justice and Behavior and has worked as a news reporter and a social worker in family and child protective services.

 

In addition to individual published articles in journals and encyclopedias, the Bartols have collaborated on and co-authored five books through multiple editions—with each subsequent edition carefully updated to reflect changes in data, research findings, theories, and law. Besides Criminal Behavior in its Eleventh Edition, they have written: Juvenile Delinquency (Third Edition, 2009); Psychology and Law (Third Edition, 2015); Introduction to Forensic Psychology (Fourth Edition, 2015); and Criminal and Behavioral Profiling (First Edition, 2013). They also have co-edited a book of readings, Current Perspectives in Forensic Psychology and Criminal Behavior (Fourth Edition, 2016).

Required reading for PSU Criminal Justice Course

Kindle version is very useful for using for class, as it supports full-text search - which is extremely useful during research for papers or open-book tests.

The content of the book... it's for class, so you have to get it.

In my opinion, however, the Bartol's seem to explain away all sense of personal responsibility for criminal acts - these criminals are never a criminal by choice - it's always some external factor that drove them to criminal behavior. Granted the book is a discussion of why criminals become criminals, in the process, it seems to skip over the fact that some people simply want to be one.

Journalist Conley examines the implications of brand-centric marketing in an incisive investigation that illustrates how defenseless consumers are against advertising—on any given day, they are assaulted by 3,000 to 5,000 ads and branding stratagems that subtly dictate every aspect of their lives. Harnessing scientific innovations, branding has become increasing insidious—whether it is the Xbox audio logo or Southwest Airlines' incorporation of the fasten seatbelt sound in their marketing campaign—consumers are being conditioned to think in brands. Beyond ad creep and product placement in entertainment programming, viral and word of mouth (WOM) marketing now make even personal recommendations suspect. According to Conley, 1% of American children and 7% of mothers are compensated for participating in WOM marketing. Even social policy is being corrupted—the author asserts that public branding initiatives such as post-Katrina New Orleans' allocation of public funds toward refurbishing its Mardi Gras City image rather than addressing its safety issues shifts resources away from problem-solving in favor of perception. Lucas Conley, who began his career at The Atlantic Monthly, is a contributing writer for Fast Company. His work has appeared in The Boston Globe and ESPN: The Magazine, among other publications. Obsessive Branding Disorder is his first book. He lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

More fluff than substance

The book was well written and somewhat entertaining. It was interesting for the first couple chapters, then went downhill quick. The biggest drawback was that the substance of the book feel off after the first couple chapters. After that, it was a lot of rehashing the same stuff. Not a bad book, just not a great one.

Conley's little book on the use and abuse of branding to sell products and services.

This was a great book. It was short (only 200 pages), but the type was small and the margins were reasonable. It's an investigative piece. The author is not a marketing expert or a writer trying to promote a marketing firm or whatever. This is a simple book that explores the status of marketing today. It questions whether the US culture has become obsessed with brands rather than quality products and new improved products.

The author says at some point that he was thoroughly amused by the extreme examples of branding he saw. And he believes the world is cheapened when EVERYONE sees it with a marketer's eye. I agree. But this book is good because it points out that branding is used AND ABUSED as a tool to sell goods and services today. A lot more use and a lot less abuse would be good!

This book informs us that successful marketers today create loyal customers who are lazy minded and don't think much before they buy. They just stick to the brand that they have learned to trust and believe in. Once a company creates a successful brand, then they milk it for all it's worth.

This book has an introduction and 9 chapters. Examine the Search Inside material provided by Amazon to see the chapter titles. I thought the book was written well and well outlined. 5 stars!

Alexander Wells is Without Peer in his Knowledge

Anyone who has read any of Alexander Well's texts on the aviation industry knows that he is without peer in his knowledge of the management and operations of the airline industry. He teaches what I believe is still the only course on airline management at any college in the nation and is highly respected for his work.
In this volume, he focuses specifically on the problems of risk and insurance as it applies to the airline industry. Although the book is relatively new, published in 2000, given the events in the industry in the past few years it may already be ripe for a revision. Regardless, the text provides a broad, yet concise, understanding of insurance and risk management as it applies to the aviation industry, both commerical and otherwise.
This book should be required reading for anyone considering a career in aviation management or working in the insurance industry with airlines.

Your "Prescription" for an introduction to Low Carbohydrate Ketogenic Nutrition

So many people are confused about what to eat, what not to eat, and why or why not.

As a cardiologist (with a master's degree in physiology of exercise), I have had to tip-toe through the mine-field of nutrition publications to help myself, before I could help my patients. I started to gain weight while doing triatholons and following a Mediterranean Diet. Then I decided to follow the same diet I recommended to heart attack victims, I followed and failed a rigorous low fat diet. I was worse, gained weight!

I realized then that my patients were not lying to me when they continued to get worse: more weight, higher BP, worse cholesterol and triglycerides DESPITE my recommendations. They told me they followed my dietary and exercise instructions and continued to gain weight, despite a dietary regimen of only breathing air and drinking water.

I was desperate. I was the Cardiologist who was becoming obese with metabolic syndrome. How could I be a reliable, credible teacher for my patients when I couldn't cure my own "disease"?

Yes, I crossed the forbidden line for cardiologists. I "went Low Carb".

I learned about the science, metabolism, and applied biochemistry of low carbohydrate nutrition from Eric Westman MD and his colleagues. I took a course involving hours of tutorials and reviews of hundreds of scientific papers. I was convinced that there was scientific merit. I became my own guinea pig.

It worked on myself. Weight came down, BP came down, Triglycerides went down and HDL went up. All as predicted. Now I offer this to my patients with confidence, and following a 60 pound weight loss, I feel better about myself and about what my patients can achieve.

This manual is the essence. I strongly recommend that anyone who wants to follow this regimen become very familiar with the contents, and bring the manual to their health care provider. If there are any medical conditions present, as there usually are, then this regimen should be done under the supervision of a health care provider who is familiar with Low Carbohydrate Ketogenic nutrition. If your health care provider is willing to go along with you, but has not had experience with a ketogenic diet bring a copy of this manual along with a copy of the book "The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living" as a gift. You, and your health care provider, will be happy that you did.

The Simple, Straightforward, Low Carb Plan that Works

This manual is a simple and effective low carb diet program; the same one used at the Duke Lifestyle Medicine Clinic. With it, I lost 55 pounds in 16 months and continue to maintain that loss without hunger, calorie counting or extensive exercise. Even better, shortly after starting the No Sugar, No Starch Diet; moderate arthritis, other joint pains, skin rashes, and blood sugar issues disappeared. At 62, I am active, energetic and enjoy vibrant good health.
It is not a long book with four diet phases or net carb formulas, but rather, the strict 20g total carb ketogenic diet that works for weight loss and diabetes control. It has simple rules and a list of allowed foods in a little booklet format to carry with you. If you have seen Dr. Westman's YouTube video of his Clinic Introduction Class, this is the short manual you should have to go with it.

Dr Westman's plan for low-carb living works!!!

I started with Dr Westman's "Low Carbohydrate, Ketogenic Diet" on November 5, 2009...using the information found in Dr. Westman's booklet. By May of 2012 (a little over 2.5 years later), I had lost right at 185 lbs, (a weight loss that I maintain to this day...almost 4 years after adopting my low-carb ("no sugar, no starch" lifestyle). For anyone thinking that it's too good to be true, or that low-carbing is not "sustainable"...please click on "my story" (complete with before and after photos at the link here... [...]

Dr. Westman's "No Sugar, No Startch" approach to living is simple, straightforward, deliciously sustainable, and saving lives every single day...this little book and most importantly, Dr. Westman and the science behind this approach, absolutely saved mine. (My "before/after" photos attest to that, if you need proof :-). Thank you always, Dr. Westman!!!
