Ultimate Eye-Candy for quilters

I love, love, love this book! It's been on my wish list for a long time, waiting for me to justify the price, but now that I have it I wish I'd splurged years ago, as it is worth every penny and more. I have spent hours paging through, drooling over the photos, and dreaming of what I might do with these patterns (er, just as soon as I finish up a few things in the UFO pile).

My husband, who is no more attuned to the finer points of quilting and interior decor than most guys, grabbed this from the kitchen table and sat down with it, saying, "Wow. Why don't you make something like this for our house?"

It's unlikely I will follow any of these patterns exactly, as I buy quilting books for inspiration rather than specific patterns, but based on these patterns I have begun to plan something spectacular for the front hall. Probably it will be years before it's done, at the rate I finish things (um, that UFO pile?). However, I expect to enjoy many more pleasant hours indulging in the pages of this book throughout that time. Even if I never get around to making anything from it, it will remain among my fave quilt books forever.

Everything about this book is terrific: not just the quilts themselves, but the photography, layout, discussion, and instructions are all very well done. Excellent.

I don't like it because ...

I bought this book with great hope. I have spent the past 12 odd years of my career working on various networking protocols. But, I had never worked on network management systems. I figured I could use a good book about network management. Looking at the TOC and the author's info (the author teaches at GaTech), I figured I wouldn't go wrong if I read this book.

The author definitely covers a lot of ground. The emphasis is squarely on SNMP based systems. The author also has some decent discussion about EMS/NMS, event-correlation, commercial and open-source management systems, etc.

So, why am I giving it 2*-s? I didn't like the book because it is very hard to read. The sentences are very difficult to read and understand. You have to make a big effort to figure out what the author is saying and even then, it's not easy. I am hoping the author and the editors simplify the language of the book and update some of the content in the next edition. So, my suggestion would be: wait till the next edition if you can, else, be ready to put in a lot of time into reading this book.

For folks serious about learning network security

I purchased this book as part of the required reading for an Information Security class at UCLA. From the start the book was full of very technical and detailed information. Having little practical network experience, my first reading focused on grasping the low-hanging fruit. As I read the book a second and third time I picked up some serious knowledge. It seemed like everytime I re-read a chapter there was more there to glean. I'm now studying for the CISSP and CISA. My initial cold self-assessments returned scores in the 80%-100% range. That's without CISSP/CISA-specific studying. I attribute most of that knowledge to this book. This was money well spent!
