Everyone could make a lot of money during market rallies when liquidity and performance chasing lift all boats and trump all bad news. Not everyone keeps that money when the inevitable correction comes.
They say that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Well, if you do the same things over and over in financial markets, you are guaranteed to get different results. Markets change; luckily in a relatively cyclical manner; unluckily the duration of each cycle is unpredictable.
Patterns repeat all the time because human mindset hasn’t changed for thousands of years. Since 1980, the S & P 500 has had an average intra-year decline of 14.2%. In 27 of last 35 years, stocks have still been positive for the year.

Corrections come a lot slower than anyone expects, but once they happen they escalate faster than most could imagine.

Each correction is preceded by distribution and weakening market breadth. The typical correction has distinct stages that vary in duration and require different tactical approach:

1) Quick and wide-spread leg lower that ends with a momentum low.
2) An oversold bounce.
3) A choppy period that whipsaws both bulls and bears.
4) A retest of the momentum lows with breadth divergence.
5) Recovery

The history of U.S. stock markets has been a perpetual long-term uptrend interrupted occasionally, but very consistently by shocks. Most of those shocks take the form of short-term drawdowns that come and go. Some corrections turn into bear markets that last more than a year. They say that almost everyone loses money in bear markets – both bulls and bears. Bulls because they stubbornly hold on to positions in favorite companies and some stocks never recover from deep drawdowns. Bears because they get squeezed during the violent rallies that happen under declining 200-day moving averages. Bear markets should be respected, but they should not be feared. They just require a different approach than what most are get used to in bull markets.

I wrote this book mainly to serve as my own guidance, to organize my thoughts and learn more in the process.

Keep in mind that everyone has his own agenda and bias, including me. The following pages present the perspective of an active trader, who believes in active portfolio management and stock picking. The thought process and observations that I share here might not be suitable for everyone.

Must-read for any investor and trader

Market corrections of at least 8-10% happen every year. Most people lose a lot of money and confidence during those times. In the first chapter of Crash, the author shows over 30 charts, showcasing all market corrections since 1980. Then, he explains how to recognize tops. While he admits that tops are almost impossible to call consistently, he provides a solid framework of guidance what to look for and how to protect capital. The rest of the chapters are spent on how to make money during market corrections. The author shares in intimate details how to find and trade short setups, how to hedge with volatility instruments, how to deal with bear markets and how to recognize market bottoms and make money during recoveries. The last chapter of the book is dedicated to how to use social media during periods of market turmoil. There’s also a list of 100 accounts to follow on Twitter. Overall, a great book!

Great value series, very enjoyable read...

Krinos (Take Over Book 1)

Krinos is an interesting story which follows Eliza or as most people know her Krinos who's being prepared by her father to take over the family drug business. She's a feisty alpha female if there is such a thing and she's prepared to do whatever it takes. She meets hot as hell Stefanos, who for the most part rocks her world. Stefanos also becomes very smitten, very quickly with the bad ass Krinos. Krinos is her father's daughter and she has no qualms about the fact that she will become boss of the "business”.

This story contains violence, drugs and sex. It is an interesting story and is a nice quick read. It’s only Book One of the Take Over Series by T.L. Smith but does not end on a cliff hanger although there is more to come I am sure. I read this book pretty much in one sitting and found it a great read. I gave this book 5 stars.

Kalon (Take Over Book 2)

Kalon, is the second book in the Take Over series. It continues where the first book finished and is the story of Eliza (Krinos) and Stefanos, her Greek God.

Krinos, is a tough woman, very tough and she really shines through in this portion of the story. We are introduced to a number of new characters, which all add to the intrigue of the story line. It also shows a softer side to Krinos, although she would hate for me to say that.

Who wouldn't love Stefanos? He really is a Greek God in all ways. He's definitely one of my current book boyfriends. Just love his dominant and demanding ways.

This is a very quick read, but I loved it. I absolutely cannot wait for the third installment. I give this book five stars.

Kratos (Take Over Book 3)

Kratos is written in Stefanos’ point of view and most definitely does not disappoint. This story just gets better and better and this book completes the Take Over Series. It gives a little background of the young Stefanos and then continues on from book two.

I love Stefanos’ point of view, it shows how he changes into the man he is, once he meets Eliza or his “Princess”. Book three takes on a different path when finally Stefanos becomes Eliza’s Kratos.

Although this is a short novella, it packs a punch and I thoroughly recommend the final book. I give this book a five star rating and cannot wait for more books by T. L. Smith.

Her work is represented by Forum Gallery, New York, and has been shown in the National Academy Museum, the Butler Institute of American Art, the Frye Art Museum, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, and in the Lingnan Museum of Fine Arts in China.  Her paintings and writing have appeared in the New York Times, American Artist, The Artist’s Magazine, the Pastel Journal and numerous other publications.  She is the recipient of several grants from the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation and the Dodge Foundation. Best pastel book I've seen

Ellen Eagle's book, "Pastel Painting Atelier" is the most complete, informative book on pastel painting I have seen. I am a pastelist, and have a collection of pastel books, and NONE compare in clarity of information, or quality of photography. I Have studied with several different pastel artists, the instruction in the book is like being in a pastel workshop. Delightful to read, and a beautiful book to add to my collection. I highly recommend it for beginners and experienced artists alike.

A marvelous book in every way. The demo alone is worth the price of admission. Valuable information about pastels, about how to use them, and even about the history of this beautiful and expressive medium. And the reproductions are first rate.

Pastel painting essential lessons

A wonderful book that is a pleasure to read. The author's sharing of her creative process and chapters on the step-by-step building of a pastel painting are invaluable. Suggestions about materials, how to evaluate a work in progress and how to correct mistakes are very helpful. The book illustrates vast expressive possibilities and quiet qualities of pastel, a medium that had its golden age more than two centuries ago but now is rather under-appreciated. It also highlights the art of looking at and truly seeing another person, without which portraiture is impossible. Those in search of bulleted supply lists and shortcuts to making fast and easy paintings may be disappointed. But if they slow down and read carefully through this book, they may discover something new to them. It can inspire an art student or a seasoned painter seeking to expand his or her repertoire and to explore a new medium.

Lots of great photo's and information to detail not only the human skeleton and its life cycle progression but how to identify many causes of death.
Honestly I would recommend this not just for students but for novel writers as well. It is fascinating.

Excellent for Beginners

Teach Yourself Turkish is one of the best language books I have ever used. Each lesson builds on the previous one, and presents useful situations that apply what is being learned in context. Vocabulary building comes quickly, and grammar, syntax and verb conjugation are explained in terms very easy to digest. My only problem with the book was the authors' occasional inclusion of new grammatical elements without explaining them. Aside from this small flaw, the book is excellent and a must for anyone wanting to learn Turkish.

Fun and fast.

This book is so much more fun than any of the other textbooks that I have tried that I am acutally eager to study. The sessions go by fast, but I feel that I really have learned a lot. The only problem I have is with the pronounciation guide at the begining which was written for British-English speakers and was confusing for me an American-English speaker. Thankfully though I have my own Turkish tutor to help me with the prounciations.

Tapes do not come with the book

The text makes reference to an accompanying cassette but all that comes from Amazon is the book. I have sent a fax to the American distributor at 847-679 2494 and an e-mail to the British distributor orders@bookpoint.co.uk but so far no way to get the tape. The British publisher is Hodder and Stoughton Educational 338 Euston Road, London NW1 3BH The book seems pretty good to me but I haven't been to Turkey yet. It's a tough language.

Trivial Trash!

There are many Patterson books that I have loved and some that I thought were not bad. This one is without a doubt the worst Patterson book I have ever read. It was a piece of slick worded, upper crust malcontents in three stories that were less than weak. I thought the book was 80% filler, 10% substance and 10% blank page. I was so looking forward to reading this book. I cannot tell you how disappointed I was when I finished it. After about 60% read, the main motivation for me to finish the book was the 20 bucks I put out for it. Waiting for the next volume in the Michael Bennett series. Hopefully by then, the bad taste of this piece of garbage will have worn off.

Vegas??? Really?

I fail to understand how this book rates all the rave reviews. IMHO, it doesn't deserve even one star. The title itself is misleading. There are brief scenarios set in Vegas at the very beginning and the very end of the book but the rest of the "action" takes place in L.A. Five different and unrelated story lines, none of them very exciting, that are all tied up in a neat little package in the last few chapters. Jack Morgan's ongoing relationship with Justine will continue in the next book in this series. There is absolutely nothing exciting about this book. It is a complete waste of time and money - and makes me wonder if I will ever be interested in reading another in the Private series.

just awful

This may be the biggest waste of time I have ever spent with a book. Absolutely no character development. Hopscotching from one silly plot line to another, the author trying to make a case for some kind of thread between them. I get the short chapters, some one or two pages at most as the authors writing style. But I got little else from this read. This was my third in the Private series, and is my last. Shame on you James Patterson for allowing your name to be associated with this book.

This collection emphasizes a frequent theme in Duffy's work: the power and complexity of feminine archetypes. Some of the characters who occupy these poems are familiar--Cleopatra, Marilyn Monroe, the Virgin Mary, Elizabeth I--but more are Duffy's inventions, such as the woman whose hometown was etched like a tattoo across her body, and the woman who dieted herself down to microscopic size. Clever conceits all, but Duffy never settles for mere cleverness. Her poetic technique is sure and subtle: long, gamboling lines seem casual but scan as exacting iambic pentameter; word choices seem conversational but express internal rhymes. A masterful long poem in which the entire student body of a girls' school becomes convulsed with laughter and changes the teachers' lives shows Duffy's skill at its peak. A slow start, on the whole this is an extraordinary collection of humorous, intelligent, beautiful poems. Recommended

A collection of 22 poems, Feminine Gospels can approximately be divided into: poems of sometimes comical feminine traits and archetypes, one long poem, and poems on women and metaphysical matters. It's a wide breadth for such a small book, all written in Duffy's sometimes-playful, sometimes-rhyming, empathetic language. The quality varies, but I believe the book gets better as it goes on. The archetypal poems didn't appeal to me, but the long poem, The Laughter of Stafford Girls' High, is brilliant and justifies the entire collection, and the denser, metaphysical poems that follow are all beautiful. Recommended.

Whether the poems are intentionally divided, I couldn't say--but there seems to be a clear difference between the thirds of the book. The first third explores the lives of beautiful women from Helen of Troy to Marilyn Monroe, a woman who diets herself down to almost nothing, a woman who's subbed for dozens of historical men's roles, and other stories of female traits (shopper, dieter) and archetypes (virgin, crone). Many of these poems share an irreverent, humorous tone; many of them mesh reality with fantastical events in a way that much reminds me of Atwood's The Edible Woman. Personally, I don't identity with any of these feminine archetypes, and I'm not a fan of humor--and so these poems, however skilfully written, left little impression on me. That may be a personal complaint, and other readers may have a better response to this section.

The Laughter of Stafford Girls' High follows. 20 times longer than the other selections, it's the story of laughter which infects a British girl's school, and it's word-perfect: Duffy's unexpected rhymes are an ideal match to the story's laughter and joy, and her voice also lends well to the remarkably sensitive emotional impact that the laughter has on the teachers. Joyous, liberating, empathetic, this long poem is well-rounded and a complete success--it alone justifies picking up this collection. The final third is made up of poems on words, umbilical cords, death, and love--more poetic, more metaphysical topics. Duffy's style curls in on itself, rich and dense; poems may require two or three readings, but they reward that effort: each a quiet, complex, metaphysical study, these poems are thoughtful and beautiful. So while this collection was initially not to my liking, it improves as it goes on and is by the end a distinct success. With such a wide breadth, there should be a poem here for every reader, and Feminine Gospels is a good place to begin with Duffy's work--I was fairly new to her poetry, and found this collection varied, approachable, and a joy to read. I recommend it.
