Written by one of the pioneers in Interventional Bronchoscopy. This book differs from the rest of the body of literature in terms of the approach to teaching.There is a logical approach to every chapter.Carefully written chapters making the reader understand why each sonographic picture appears in the way it appears. Would have been very good if they had included 10R and 10 L lymph nodes in their chapters. But nothing to take away from the benefits of this book

About the Author
Christian Harder is a writer at Esri and author of a number of case study books on GIS. Tim Ormsby is a technical writer at Esri and has created and contributed to ArcGIS training courses for both the classroom and online learning. Ormsby coauthored Esri Press's best-selling workbook Getting to Know ArcGIS Desktop (Esri Press 2010). Thomas Balstrøm is the coauthor of the Danish-language Book of GIS and Geodata. He worked for two decades as an associate professor in GIS and physical geography at University of Copenhagen, Denmark, and is now a freelance GIS consultant.

A big attention to the end-user experience

This workbook is a very user-friendly written book for those interested to begin using ArcGIS Desktop. I am 3/4 of the book through and I am impressed for the care and will to have readers learn ArcGIS and GIS for true. This said, don't expect to become an expert at the end because this is simply a good introduction to ArcGIS. And more precisely, the book is written from the point of view of a GIS analyst (you learn in the beginning of the book that there are 5 categories of ArcGIS users: editors, cartographers, analysts, programmers, managers). The book guides the reader step by step through a project which aims at finding a suitable land parcel(s)for a new park area in Los Angeles.You use real data which comes in the companion DVD. When you reach the final stage in chapter 6 and follow all the careful steps to manually select the best areas and you learned why you do so, you discover in the following chapter (chapter 7) that you can do the same in a much quicker way by using a visual graphing tool, a marvel in my opinion of ArcGIS Desktop.
The reader doesn't need to buy ArcGIS desktop since a two months demo can be used as well. Alternatively, a user can apply for a "home user" account and pay just a fraction of the full price (conditions apply)
All in all, the workbook is excellent. The general impression is to seat in a jumbo-jet cockpit and start understanding the instructions...only to forget them and be remembered again and again through the superb user-friendlines of the text and the many graphicallly clear and precise pictures (plus you see often a line saying "don't remember how to?...then read here or skip it if you know" ). The book comes also with videos hosted in the esri website but I must say I'd rather prefer the text that I can read and skim through away from a computer for further "digestion". The whole project can be done in a week but most probably it is better in my opinion to allow yourself 2-3 weeks or so and go back and forth the many different crucial point again and again (e.g. changing and selecting coordinates, geo referencing, editing, etc...). I found that the present version, 10.1, of AcGIS does not change significantly from the earlier version used for the book. Only in one or two examples I found the pictures slightly different from version 10.1 and only in one case I found myself stuck with instructions (in chapter 6) whereby I don't know if this is beacause I did something wrong (most probably) or if the text of the book was wrong/outdated.
I recommed this book, in the end it's much cheaper than paying for an instructor-led seminar.
It will be a good reference book, too.

A Lot of Bang for Your Buck

Understanding GIS is a breath of fresh air! It is an ArcGIS workbook that'll PAINLESSLY show you the basics. It's conceit is that it asks the user (or reader) to seriously locate the best spots along the famous LA River to create public parks. You remember, the LA River! It's not so much a river as it is an enormous unsightly concrete trough that runs through the city for the purpose of flood control. You've seen it in the movies. The climax of the 1950s giant-ant hit THEM! was shot at one of its junctures and Terminator 2: Judgment Day used some of its narrower corridors for that astonishing truck chasing the motorbike scene. You get my point, the LA River is depressed and graffiti-ridden . . . but city officials have come to understand that the many patches of open space and green that still exist near and at the edge of the river can be revived and used as focal points of community gathering. In fact these glens of tranquility have been sprouting like mushrooms along the river, and the city is helping along the process by making available the insightful website LAriver dot org.

Thus this book contrives to pitch in for the public good by asking the user to take REAL DATA from the City of Los Angeles' Department of Public Works, Bureau of Engineering's Mapping Division, and Department of Recreation and Parks and to manipulate it using the awesome power of GIS [and we're NOT talking about Google Earth people!]. Users are provided a colossal amount of data with the book's project DVD, and the book explains that in an actual GIS project you would find excellent data amassed at countless agencies, vendors, and institutions.

Sorry for the long aside: The point of this book is to walk you step-by-step, mouse-click-by mouse-click, decision-by-decision through a GIS project to determine for yourself which locations along the river are best suited for public recreational use. At the end, you will have learned many of the fundamentals of GIS generally and ArcGIS specifically.

Plus it is just plain fun. But I'm partial to old science fiction movies.

A realistic project illustrating the best of what GIS does

I was once in a Master's program in landscape architecture at a very good university. I was unhappy--well, partly because I just could not draw! But, I also felt the program was ignoring computers and all the many factors that go into making something important for the social fabric--such as making public parks. I dropped out, got into CAD, ended up teaching that, later found GIS and got my Master's in GIS/Geography at another fine university. A long trip, but definitely worth it.

I mention all this because this book represents exactly what I was looking for! I have now been in GIS for several years in various research positions. Still, this book does a great job of providing the foundation for well-intentioned enterprises. My inner landscape designer wants a defensible foundation for any good municipal design.

I give the book four stars instead of five only because it does not show how to transform that ModelBuilder model into some working Python code. Yeah, I know that's a lot to ask for. But, in a realistic project, the model would probably be turned into Python and refined at the script level.

My Intro to GIS professor was one of the finest in the USA. For the lab portion of his course, he led us through a semester long project very similar in its flowchart to the one in this book. Nothing can take the place of a fine series of lectures on the concepts and evolving science of GIS. But this book will give you real hands-on experience.

Really Informative Book on Backgrounds

As an amateur photographer, I try to learn as much as I can through reading books and practicing on friends and family, and because this isn't my full-time job, I try to conserve costs when possible without affecting quality. Ryan Klos' book taught me so much about all different kinds of backgrounds. Most importantly, I learned where I can think budget and where I should spend my money to capitalize of a maximum affect. The book is very readable and full of pictures, so you can make up your own mind, too.

LOVE LOVE LOVE this book -- it not only tells but shows, which I think is so valuable for a topic like this. You might not expect to feel all that inspired by backgrounds, but I got so many new ideas and also gained a new-found appreciation for photo settings. I've already tried some of his ideas. Thank you Ryan Klos! The photo examples in this book are great, and it's written in a very straightforward and understandable way. A lot of times how-to books are kind of dry. Klos is obviously a creative writer, because his explanations are so readable. Regardless of your experience level in photography, I highly recommend this book, because it covers such a range of topic (all nicely organized) including how to create and/or use (even on a budget) traditional drape or fabric, digital, all white or all black, paper, and cyc wall backgrounds; flooring and floordrops; natural settings (both urban and rural); scouting locations (great ideas here, people!); and even props and dangling items or lights. You'll also get some great new backdrop ideas and tips on portable backdrops, storage, and setting up. It's worth noting that the book includes opinions and examples from a few different professional photographers, so you also get a range of styles and "looks" to further illustrate all of the ideas. Even though the main topic is backgrounds, I really liked the many illustrated tips on lighting, angles, framing, depth of field and cropping -- the kind of details that make a good photo great. Again, I can't say enough about how helpful this one book has been. Buy it!

Excellent for the Novice and Professional alike.

What an excellent resource! Really a must have for any photographer. I learned so many tips, tricks and techniques in this book that it will really change the way I "see" portraits, or photography in general. Ryan not only explained the techniques but showed examples to further drive it home. This book is far more than just "Backdrops and Backgrounds" though. Ryan touches on little bit of everything from lighting techniques, modifiers, props, locations, when to shoot, etc. As I said before, this is a wonderful resource to keep in your library for constant reference.

About the Author

Richard Rawlings, a native of Fort Worth, Texas, developed a passion for automobiles from an early age, attending professional car shows with his dad and buying and selling multiple vehicles in his teens. A veteran of transcontinental road rallies, he has won the Gumball 3000 and the Bullrun twice, and he broke a world record in the Cannonball Run that had stood for twenty-five years. He is the owner of the world-renowned hot rod shop Gas Monkey Garage and the star of Discovery's hit series Fast N' Loud.

MARK DAGOSTINO is a New York Times bestselling coauthor and a former senior writer at People magazine. Although he's never competed in a road rally or built a hot rod, his very first car was a Chevy Camaro, and his favorite road trip ever was a solo cross-country drive in a Porsche he purchased for $5,000.

You don't have to love cars, the show or even Richard to LOVE this book!

The first time I saw Fast N Loud I was in a small restaurant in the U.S. Virgin Islands. At the bar was a large group of fisherman (at least 20) gathered around a small TV. One man was loudly translating every word Richard and Aaron spoke into Spanish and the group watching was laughing and hanging on to every word. I had to find out what show this was and who these guys on tv were. A couple of months later I was in the same bar, must have been a Monday, cause all the guys were gathered around the TV watching/translating Fast N Loud again. Fast forward to now, and I can see why Richard has such a great following and family of fans all over the world.
Everyone loves to see a good before and after, the show does that very well. But behind the finished build, we all know there's a lot of work that goes unseen (only so much you can show in an hour). A lot of people think Richard was made in a day, like the builds on the show, but this book dives deep into the beginning of a dream, all the hard work it took just to step away and pursue the dream, the people who believed in his dream, enough to jump whole heartedly into it, and eventually how 11 years later he became an overnight success. It's a really inspiring story with lessons that can apply to anyone, you don't have to love cars, the show or even Richard. Give it a read and you might be inspired to keep going, keep hustling and keep dreaming.
I've had the pleasure of working with Richard and Gas Monkey Garage on a couple of video projects through a client and vendor of theirs. I'm impressed by their humility, realness and overall work ethic. I thought I knew the whole story, but this book filled in the blanks. I'm excited to see how the next chapters unfold.

Fast, Loud, and Arrogant

As a huge fan of the show Fast and Loud, I have always liked Richard Rawlings. His personality is so big, as is his motivation and drive. My favorite part was about his early life before his TV show. I think the beginning of the book was better than the end. It was excellent to read about how he became successful over the years and the story of his relationship with his wife. It was truly a story of a self made man, who is charming, motivated and who had a little luck. The last part of the book he's giving advice on how to flip cars, and he kind of came off as bragging about how great he is. I wish he could have been a little more humble. He has an excellent success story, but he ended up sounded a little more self absorbed than I had expected. I did enjoy the peek into his early life/career, and learning more about Aaron. But, the book could have wrapped up before he started trying to train the amateur car flipper to be like him.

A great tale of Colonial America

This is a fantastic series by Donald Clayton Porter that describes the life of "Renno" the fictional Seneca Warrior that is also a "white" man. The series begins in the 1670's when Colonial America was beginning to branch out from the American Coastline.
Renno, becomes the adopted son of the great "Ghonka", the main Chief/Warrior of the Iroqouis Confederacy. Renno grows to become a skillful warrior, leader, and emissary between the Colonial Americans and his people. Porter may have simplified and added some "tall tales" to this fictional series, however, it does not distract the reader one bit.
Renno's adventures, dealings with his Indian family and his relations with the Colonial Americans is interesting and I dare say "quite a page-turning". This is the first novel in a large series that tells about Renno's life and the generations after him.
The early books are long out of print, however if you ever have an opportunity to find the books, I can tell you that you will not be dissapointed in the least! This is a series that needs to be re-issued so other fans of historical fiction can enjoy this fine author's tales.

The Colonization of America Series

The Colonization of America series is a gripping tale of the beginnings of America. Over all the story spans many generations of particular families.

The series starts with White Indian as book 1. In this book you learn about Ghonka and his white born son Renno. The story is fast pace but flows seamlessly from event to event and is very well written. As you read you can feel the hardships of life on a frontier but the power that grips the settlers that comes from cultivating your own land. And you feel the heritage of the Native Americans and the strength that they glean from the wilderness.

I would strongly recommend this book and this series to everyone interested in the historical fiction genre. This is a powerfully moving series that only gets better as you move along and get further engrained in the story.

Remarkable

I read 10 of the Series when they first came out in the 80's and thourghly enjoyed them all! The books give a great description of our country and the Seneca Indians and the horrific lives they lead. I highly recommend the "White Indian Series". Although I enjoyed all of the books that I read of these series my personal favorite,as I recall, was "Renegade". Donald Clayton Porter, the author, did a fantastic job on his description of the Indians. I hope that everyone that reads these books will get as much enjoyment out of them as I did. Cleanwaters06

Insightful

When I got Wendy's book and started reading the few first pages, I texted my girlfriend the title and she immediately got a copy and devoured it in just two days. Later in that same week I happen to find myself in the waiting room of a car repair shop and noticed a very young woman across from me and she wasn't wearing a ring. I felt the leading of the Holy Spirit and asked her if she was married, and she said no. So I asked her to get out a piece of paper and write the name of this book and asked her to get it. This is so out of the ordinary for me, normally I don't witness like this. But I feel that this is a very timely and needed book for our generation and if we who have been "heartbroken" and have failed in past relationships can help the next generation value themselves and not settle this is the book that does that. I can't wait for Wendy's next book, the story of when her Boaz comes up and sweeps her off her feet.

From a man's viewpoint...

Well-written and easy to read, this book is written mainly for Christian women. Wendy wants to encourage women that they are valuable to God and a prize to be won, therefore they should see themselves accordingly and never settle for a man who sees them as less.

As a man reading this book for reference purposes, I didn't expect to get much out of it for me personally, especially given that I have been on the unbelieving side of things the past decade. The examples of God speaking and moving in her life supernaturally reminded me of a time I once had similar experiences, and this always helps me revisit those times and try to see God at work in my life. Given there was a time I believed God had once spoken to be about marrying a woman, and like the pearl of great price, sold everything I owned to buy the ring and propose to her (she said no), I wondered if in fact I was worthy to be called to pursue my prize these days.

I used Wendy as a model of a strong, beautiful Christian woman any man should be happy to pursue, a woman who is valued by God and is himself finding a husband for her. I asked myself hypothetically, what if that man was me? How would I respond? How was my walk with God? What did my life look like? Did I feel that life was ready for God to speak to me to pursue a godly woman like Wendy? If not, how far was I and what would I need to do to prepare? These were difficult questions for me as it showed me the gap between how I saw myself and how far I was from feeling confident of being in a place where God could speak to me about pursuing someone.

What was also eye-opening for me after reading dozens of Christian dating books is that there are many different people in the world with many different gifts, callings, personalities, situations, and desires, and that God is infinitely creative in how he brings potential spouses together. There seems to me to be no perfect formula or test for knowing how God will bring people together, when, or why.

I look forward to the day Wendy has a ring on her finger, and when she does, maybe she can write another book telling us how God finally brought her and her husband together.

You'll Never Forgive Yourself if You Don't Read This Book!

Multi-published author, Wendy Griffith, invites the reader to join her on a highly personal journey as she discovers the value of her own worth. Seen through her eyes, coupled with God's valuation of her life, one finds themselves stumbling along then righting themselves in concert with her numerous epiphanies. I found myself feeling her pain, hoping she'd reach for the right door, and stunned by the selfish indifference from the one entrusted with her heart.

Cover to cover the reader engages in varied levels of empathy; holding our breath until she is safely delivered by her Good Shepherd's capable arm. As the author musters the courage to enter the valley of decision, we cannot help but cheer; watching her draw a deep line in the sand and refusing further mistreatment. Her pain in leaving an immature suitor, becomes her bridge to unexpected opportunities and a solid platform for ministry.

For any woman questioning why they are drawn to emotionally unavailable and indecisive men, this book becomes the road map to healthy destinations and mindsets. I applaud Miss Griffith's determination to dust herself off, dry her tears, and sound the alarm for other women in similar predicaments. Her self-described "test" becomes literary medicine to those terminally love sick and points them in the direction of a gentle God waiting to comfort the brokenhearted. Griffith's discovery is the flashing yellow light that warns of unseen dangers--offering a practical yet heartfelt exit strategy for those seeking true contentment in their relationships. I highly endorse this labor of love and pivotal manuscript.

About the Author
Caterina Perrone works in the media and information sectors across Europe and Latin America. She holds an MA in Translation Studies and Economics from the University of Mainz (Germany) and an MSc in Globalization and Latin American Development from the Institute of the Studies of the Americas (University of London and London School of Economics). She lived in Chile for two years, where she worked both in the business and the nonprofit sectors, and spent months traveling to the most remote corners of the country.

Short, interesting and good preparation for a visit to Chile

Well I liked this book and recommend it. I read it on the plane on my first trip to Chile. I found this book both interesting and helpful. It is short and covers topics - including what many might consider sensitive ones such as the traditional importance of class to Chilean relationships and the traditional role of "connections" in economic and social life. Since I was on a social and not business trip, I especially liked the descriptions of social and family relationships.

I believe I gained understandings and insights that I would have missed as a new visitor. I was traveling with a Chilean family which was great; we got comfortable and trusting together so I could ask them about some of the things I read in the book and based on their responses, the book is on track and they elaborated on interesting things.

Good effort, but many errors

This is a generally good, if small and flawed, superficial introduction book on Chile.

It contains a number of errors, however, which reflect poor research practices, wishful thinking, and probably some political correctness. In other words, it's unreliable and not to be quoted seriously.

For example, there is a statement on page 32 that after the election of Allende in 1970, that "President Nixon halted all US investment and aid to Chile." This statement is patently false. Even Kissinger's famous memos in 1970 called for "reduction" rather than elimination of US assistance and investments. US investment did decline sharply but was not halted by presidential order, and selective US aid types continued and were even expanded. US AID assistance continued, at a reduced level, every year that Allende was in office. Ironically, even US military aid continued during the Allende administration. Similarly, other statements concerning the post-1973 military administration are nothing more than attempts at (leftist) political correctness, with no historical validity, such as the page 49 allegation that "nightlife came to a halt" during this period (the eventual toque de queda for Santiago was only between the hours of 2 and 5 am before it was abandoned altogether). I had no trouble getting around at night there during the late 1970s.

Many of the other historical observations are carelessly ambiguous, such as the page 57 note that Chile and Argentina were on the "brink of war" in 1978 due to a border dispute in the Patagonia region. Actually, Argentina was preparing to invade Chile and take possession of Chilean islands in the Beagle Channel, which is south of Tierra del Fuego.

Some statements are careless and silly, such as the statement that "Chileans are trustworthy" (absolute rubbish) or the page 14 observation that southern Patagonia is only accessible by air and overland via Argentina, forgetting -- oops --- the large number of tourists who reach the region by ship every year. On the subject of trustworthiness, it would be well for the author to acknowledge that Chile has the second-highest rate of theft-robbery in all of the Western Hemisphere, second only to Argentina.

With a publication date of 2007, many of the practices noted in this book are now fading into the past, or no longer observed by more modern organisations. So the book is both outdated and unreliable.

Despite the errors and ambiguities, this little book does a generally good (and occasionally quite accurate) job of introducing some aspects of Chile on a very superficial level.

History + Culture= a good read

I'm really happy that I purchased this book. I am going to Chile and wanted a book that dove into culture aspects where a traditional travel book doesn't. I also liked that it had a short history section too. Just enough to highlight their history but not enough to put me to sleep.
