From School Library Journal
Grade 2-5-Freddy the Pig books by Walter R. Brooks have gone in and out of print for the last 40 years, but he gets a new life with this recording about his time as a politician. Freddy and his farmyard friends on Mr. Bean's farm decide to start the First Animal Bank of Centerboro and the First Animal Republic to show how responsible they are while the Beans are on holiday in Europe. Some of the vocabulary is beyond the level of elementary students today, but by listening to the clear reading of the book, the words can be understood in context. Narrator John McDonough gives each animal a different voice and personality. Each tape is clearly labeled for the chapters included. The audio versions of Freddy the Detective, Freddy the Pilot, and Freddy Goes to the North Pole, also narrated by McDonough, are available from Recorded Books as well.

Review
Praise for Freddy the Pig:

"Freddy's readers have called him a porcine prince... Walter R. Brook's gentle genius shines even brighter."--Nicholas Kristoff, The New York Times

"At my funeral, in lieu of flowers, I'd prefer that people give money to the Friends of Freddy fan club."--Deirdre Donahue, USA Today

"Freddy is blessed with courage, wit, agility and a Sherlock Holmes-like capacity for detective work."--Newsday

"Freddy's fame is growing--just not on his home turf. With that in mind, we suggest you find one of the books. After a few pages, guaranteed, you'll be proud he's our pig."-- Syracuse Post Standard

"The American version of the great English classics such as the Pooh books or The Wind in the Willows."--The New York Times Book Review

"[Walter Brooks'] prose was simple but elegant, without being dumbed down, and that the characters weren't plaster saints. Freddy was a bit lazy, a little vain, and not much of a house--uh, penkeeper. But the spirit of the stories was like the spirit of the Bean Farm's animals--kind, amiable, and clever."--The American Culture Blog

One of the best, but probably most challenging, Freddy books
By A Customer
I have read now seven or eight Freddy books with my six year old son. In terms of story and language, some have been very engaging and well written, and some not. Occasionally, these books have more sophisticated themes, and have introduced my son to new ideas such as the power of the press, and the justice system.
Freddy the Politician was one of these, and likely the most sophisticated (keeping in mind that we are dealing with books about talking farm animals) of the series. It was written during WWII, but well before the US became involved. This background is very apparent once the story hits its stride.
The animals decide to set up a bank, and then to form the First Animal Republic. In setting up the bank, they feel that it needs a sober and worldly president, so that it will be a credible institution. John Quincy Adams, a woodpecker visiting from Washington DC, seems to fill the bill and takes the position.
Soon, John Quincy has brought in his father, Grover, to run for president of the FAR, and sinister plans are afoot. The election has everything: manipulation of voters lists, ballot fraud, insincere election promises, pork barrel, you name it. When these fail to win him the election, Grover takes power by coup.
Overnight, he is arresting his political enemies, annexing the Sudetenland - I mean, the neighbouring farms, and seeking world domination.
How is that for a tense story line in a kids book?

a Freddy classic
By A Customer
Gosh. I don't see how anyone can give "Freddy the Politician" less than 5 stars. Freddy's "dropping in" to the board meeting at the bank -- Mrs. Wiggins' wonderful advice about the uses of laughter -- Bertram the robot going beserk and grabbing his own operator's tailfeathers -- it's all vintage Freddy. How great to have this classic back in print. Be sure to buy an extra for your local library when you buy one for yourself.

I know that many adults - my son and I included - enjoy the stories as well
By Grandma E
Although the Freddy books are considered children's literature, I know that many adults - my son and I included - enjoy the stories as well. Some of the books have been birthday or Christmas gifts for a now 15 year old grandson who has enjoyed the stories for several years. He's always delighted to receive a Freddy book.

A lot of book for so little information.
By Anthony P. Libri
This is one of many books that is about real estate investing. Although well written it is not jam-packed with information. So many times successful authors really connect with a great book, then they do a follow up book hoping to have repeat success. This book is one of those types of books The author takes a short subject and stretches it into a book. In fact, I believe this is one of three books in this series. This book uses a lot of paper to give you a little bit of information. Here is the book in a nutshell...You make money when you buy property not when you sell it... So hold it!

If you're looking for a Real Nuts and Bolts book and how to get started in investing in Real Estate, this is it
By Ron Sudman
This book is simple and something you can implement immediately. Most investment books give you a PHD but you never implement it, so what good is that. Implementation is 80% of the challenge especially with investing. It's easy to follow and understand from the investor who is starting today for the first time, to the sophisticated investor of many years. You don't need all the bells and whistles you need something simple and something that you can use and implement right NOW. I've been an investor for 30 years and a Broker/Agent and this is the E-ticket for investing in Real Estate. It's something you can wrap your head around immediately. You can tell the people who wrote this book have done it themselves and they’re not just talking about it to sell books. That’s very refreshing to see in today's world of Real Estate investing.

Great book for the library
By Blair A. Russell
If you are interested in this kind of real estate investment than this book is great. I would not call it all encompassing though, it is definitely lacking in some areas, but it still has great tips and information for beginners. I would say it focus more on the financial side then the day to day practices, but it does explain the financial really well. Like I said add it to the library but don't rely solely on it.

A student's review of the textbook.
By Sir Captain Noobhead
I have to offer a counterpoint compared to Mr Baumgardner's self review of this textbook.

I am a third year psychology student at a university located in the midwest. We use this book as our standard text in our 400-level course on positive psychology. Over the course of this semester, I have read this book cover to cover and used it extensively to study for tests, etc.

Let's start with the positives.
1) This textbook has excellent organization, the topics are very distinct, and the headings and subheadings let you know exactly what each section and paragraph is going to be about.
2) Many studies are talked about extensively, and this book is very good for research purposes. The author has a very good handle on scientific method, and certainly knows what he is talking about.
3) The bolded vocabulary words are very helpful and gives a recap of important concepts.

Now the negatives.
1) I'll flat out say it. This book is very dry. Even though it's supposed to be a book on "positive" psychology, I often felt bored and miserable while reading through it. While it is very informative, I feel that most sections are simply -- describe a concept, and talk about three or four different studies and give evidence, etc. The main point of the book is not to convince students that the concepts are true, we don't doubt that. However, ideas and theories should be taught in a way that they become relate-able. I highly recommend following the style of Robert Cialdini's Influence, which tries to teach concepts in the form of interesting stories, examples, and anecdotes.
2) Put some pictures, charts, graphs and colours in the book! The majority of the 300+ pages of this book is in black and white text. I know we are college students, but some formatting and visuals would make this book much more interesting.
3) This text is very wordy. A lot of the concepts can be described using a third of the words. An idea should be presented once and clearly communicated as opposed to repeated in convoluted ways three or four times.

Overall, this book teaches some very relevant ideas and concepts on positive psychology, but the presentation is lackluster and bland. I look forward to future editions of the book when some of these issues can be addressed.

L'Uniforme et les Armes des Soldats de la Guerre en Dentelle. Tome 2. 1700-1800 France, Grande-Bretagne et Prusse: Cavalerie et artillerie,

Until the mid 18th century, armies still move by monolithic mass, slow to maneuver and slow to deploy; it is difficult to throw at the enemy. Indeed, while they put themselves in battle array, it has time to escape. Risking battle is risking everything. One pound with the certainty of defeat, otherwise we dodge. Where multiple maneuvers, scholarly and prim, sometimes sophisticated. We can even, by these maneuvers, forcing the opponent without a fight. Maurice de Saxe wrote a skillful general may avoid battle throughout life.

Walt Disney: The Triumph of the American Imagination, by Neal Gabler

The definitive portrait of one of the most important cultural figures in American history.

Walt Disney was a true visionary whose desire for escape, iron determination and obsessive perfectionism transformed animation from a novelty to an art form, first with Mickey Mouse and then with his feature films–most notably Snow White, Fantasia, and Bambi. In his superb biography, Neal Gabler shows us how, over the course of two decades, Disney revolutionized the entertainment industry. In a way that was unprecedented and later widely imitated, he built a synergistic empire that combined film, television, theme parks, music, book publishing, and merchandise. Walt Disney is a revelation of both the work and the man–of both the remarkable accomplishment and the hidden life.

Amazon.com Review
Neal Gabler's meticulously researched biography, Walt Disney offers the full story (Gabler is the first writer to gain complete access to the Disney archives) of the American icon. Readers will discover the whole story, witnessing Disney's invention of a "synergistic empire that combined film, television, theme parks, music, book publishing, and merchandise." What fans don't know could fill a book (this book in fact), and we asked Gabler to point out a few of the juicy bits. Read our interview with him, and his "10 Things That May Surprise You" list below. --Daphne Durham

10 Second Interview: A Few Words with Neal Gabler

Q: Why Walt Disney?
A: When you write about someone as grandiose as Walt Disney, you may tend to get a little grandiose yourself, so forgive me. But I had always set the task for myself to examine the forces that helped define American culture in the twentieth century and those individuals who might be regarded as the architects of the American consciousness. Walt Disney was certainly one of those forces and one of those architects. His visual sensibility is arguably one of the two most important in the last century, along with Picasso's, yet Picasso has received dozens of biographies and Walt Disney had, when I began, not received a single full-scale, fully-annotated biography. I wanted to fill that gap in our cultural studies. I thought that if one could understand Walt Disney, one could go a long way to understanding American popular culture.

Q: One thing that strikes you when reading the book is that Walt Disney never had any money. With all his success how is that possible?
A: It is astonishing that Walt Disney was always--and I do mean always--in dire financial straits until the opening of Disneyland. The primary reason wasn't that his cartoons weren't making money, because they were--at least until the war in Europe when the loss of that market meant disaster for the features. But even as they were making money, the studio was losing money because Walt was constitutionally incapable of cutting corners, enforcing economies, laying off staff. The only thing about which Walt Disney cared was quality. He thought that quality was the way to maintain his preeminence, though quality also had the psychological advantage of letting him perfect his world. The problem was that quality was expensive. To cite just one example, Walt spent more than a hundred thousand dollars setting up a training program for would-be animators, though even then the return was small because Walt was so picky that very few of the candidates actually qualified to work at the studio. Money meant very little to Walt Disney. It was only a means to an end, never an end in itself.

Q: When did Walt first conceive of the idea for Disneyland and what were the initial reactions to the idea?
A: It is very difficult to determine exactly when Walt hatched the idea for Disneyland, though he seems to have been thinking about it for a long time, at least since the early 1930s. Certainly by the time he was taking his daughters, Diane and Sharon, to amusement parks on Sunday afternoons in the late 1940s, he had formulated the idea to establish a park that was clean and wholesome and where parents wouldn't be afraid to take their children. The original plan was to build the park on a plot adjacent to the studio in Burbank, where there would be a train, a town square, an Indian village and kiddieland rides, but as Walt's ideas expanded, so did the need for a bigger plot. As for the reactions to his idea, Roy was initially reluctant, as usual, and Walt's wife, Lillian, was firmly opposed, though she had also been opposed to his making Snow White. Still, Walt exaggerated the opposition as a way, I think of elevating his own foresight and determination. In fact, as the plan grew closer to realization, corporations sought to be included as lessees, and even banks, that had been skeptical, became more receptive. When the park opened, it was an instant success.

Q: What do you think has been Walt's most lasting impact/legacy on American culture?
A: One could answer this question in a dozen different ways depending on one's priorities, but I think his largest bequest is a matter of the American mind. Walt Disney helped change the national consciousness. He got people to believe in the power of wish fulfillment--in their own ability to impose their wills on a recalcitrant reality. That's what Walt Disney did all his life. He managed to replace reality with his illusions--what some people now refer to disparagingly as Disneyfication. He sold us on the idea of control because Walt Disney was himself a master of control. We see the results everywhere--from film to theme parks to virtual reality to virtual politics.

You Don't Know Disney: 10 Things That May Surprise You

1. He is not frozen. His body was cremated, and his ashes are interred at the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale, California, near his studio.
2. Mickey Mouse's original name allegedly was Mortimer but Disney's wife Lillian objected because she thought it too "sissified."
3. Some of the names originally considered for the dwarfs in Snow White were: Deafy, Dirty, Awful, Blabby, Burpy, Gabby, Puffy, Stuffy, Nifty, Tubby, Biggo Ego, Flabby, Jaunty, Baldy, Lazy, Dizzy, Cranky and Chesty.
4. Walt Disney suffered a nervous breakdown in 1931 and descended into depression after the war, concentrating his attention on model trains rather than on motion pictures.
5. Fantasia was the result of a chance meeting between Walt Disney and symphony conductor Leopold Stokowski at Chasen's restaurant.
6. During World War II the Disney studio became a war factory with well over 90% of its production in the service of government training, education and propaganda films.
7. The studio stopped production for six months on Pinocchio because Walt felt the title character wasn't likable enough. During this time he devised the idea of introducing Jiminy Cricket as Pinocchio's conscience.
8. Walt Disney received more Academy Awards than any other individual--32.
9. Disney modeled Mickey Mouse on Charlie Chaplin and that Chaplin later assisted the Disneys by loaning them his financial books so they could determine what kind of proceeds they should be getting from their distributor on Snow White.
10. MGM head Louis B. Mayer once rejected the opportunity to distribute Mickey Mouse cartoons shortly after Walt had invented the character because Mayer said that pregnant women would be frightened by a giant mouse on screen.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Few men could be said to have as pervasive an influence on American culture as Walt Disney, and Gabler (Winchell) scours the historical record for as thorough an explanation of that influence as any biographer could muster. Every period of Disney's life is depicted in exacting detail, from the suffering endured on a childhood paper route to the making of Mary Poppins. The core of Gabler's story, though, is clearly in the early years of Disney's studio, from the creation of Mickey Mouse to the hands-on management of early hits like Fantasia and Pinocchio. "Even though Walt could neither animate, nor write, nor direct," Gabler notes, "he was the undisputed power at the studio." Yet there was significant disgruntlement within the ranks of Disney's employees, and Gabler traces the day-to-day resentments that eventually led to a bitter strike against the studio in 1941. That dispute helped harden Disney's anticommunism, which led to rumors of anti-Semitism, which are effectively debunked here. At times, Gabler lays on a bit thick the psychological interpretation of Disney as control freak, but his portrait is so engrossing that it's hard to picture the entertainment mogul playing with his toy trains and not imagine him building Disneyland in his head. 32 pages of photos. 100,000 first printing. From Bookmarks Magazine
Neal Gabler, who penned a well-received biography of journalist Walter Winchell and An Empire of Their Own: How the Jews Invented Hollywood, among other books, is the first writer to have complete access to the Walt Disney archives. Much of that wealth of information makes its way into this hefty tome. At nearly 900 pages (including 200 pages of notes), the author risks losing all but the most devoted Disney fans. Gabler uses engaging prose, numerous anecdotes, and firsthand accounts of the events of Disney's life, however, to balance the more mundane details about production budgets and the day-to-day workings of Disney's empire. For the most part, Gabler succeeds. The book works best when he focuses on Disney's often contradictory and mercurial character.

Look Auntie! They're Paying me to Draw Pictures! They're Paying me to Draw Pictures!
By Nancy Beiman
Walt Disney has become a legendary character of the twentieth century. So much was written about him, and so much was inaccurate, that the legends often attained a currency that was not deserved. How many times have we heard that he was frozen? Gabler (who was the first of Walt's biographers to work with rare Disney family records) opens the book with this statement (it's not true.)

The truth is much more interesting than that.

Disney was an optimistic, hardworking go-getter with an astounding capacity for concentration who fell in love with the early twentieth century's high technology--motion pictures. Motion pictures drawn by hand.

He had the perseverance to start over again every time he failed artistically and financially. And fail he did. This is one of the most unlikely success stories ever told, since the Disney Brothers studio was working in a marginal field (animation) in a minor city (Kansas, then Hollywood, when the animation studios were all in New York), and attempting to make it as an independent producer just as the big studios were forming, eliminating independent competition in all but a few areas by 1928.

He made it because he had the unfashionable idea that quality would out, he had a tremendous amount of luck and he knew how to make appealing entertainment(Mickey Mouse was NOT the first successful character he created). Disney also had a real genius for hiring talented people. A surprising number of remarkable artists started with him in Kansas City, others were trained right on the studio lot.

Mr. Gabler's book is readable and contains much new information. Who would have thought that Charlie Chaplin was, at one time, Snow White's Prince? Chaplin, one of the few independent producers left by 1936, loaned his books for MODERN TIMES to the Disneys to help them ask fair prices for their landmark feature. For Disney's weak spot was running the business--he once actually forgot to add on the profit to the budget for a job in Kansas City, and was forced to work for cost of materials, with no salary for him or his animators! The 1941 strike by his artists was seen as a personal betrayal--but this strike can be predicted when you read about that early project. The Dream was the goal but (as an old cartoon states) coal is still somewhat important. Disney had his head in the clouds, and his brother Roy, who played the father's role to his sibling since childhood, was a major reason why Walt's feet were kept on the ground. It was a fine parntership and this is really a dual biography.

The truth about Disney is not sensational or scandalous--just refreshing after decades of inaccuracy and outright fabrication that somehow passed for fact.

The weakest part of the book is Gabler's attempts to psychoanalyze Walt's obsession with animation production as a desire to control his world. Of course he controlled his world. This is what all artists do. We animators love creating characters that APPEAR to think and move for themselves. They are really just an expression of our own sentiments and desires; we create life. That's what animation means. It's wonderful being able to control every aspect of the film's production-to be leading man, leading woman, and sets as well! Disney is hardly exceptional in this respect and the psychological insights don't ring true for me.

As one other animator told me, Disney was remarkable because 'he was the only man in the world who ever got 500 artists to work together in one building without KILLING each other!"

Having collected and read about Walt Disney and animation for 30+ years, I found that the only proper way to read Gabler's biography is as follow-up to the great book by Michael Barrier, "An Animated Man", also available on Amazon. Barrier gives the structure of Walt's life as centered on Walt's true loves: his animation and his parks. While Barrier's book is a very pleasant read, and gives insight in what made Walt tick. As a contrast, Gabler recites data as if it was a class in Latin and represents Walt as a kind of nut. Gabler clearly neither likes nor understands Walt. He also has no knowledge of--or love for--the medium of animation, and he keeps talking of Walt's "animations," an expression that is only used by people who have no idea what they are talking about. But he did have access to the Archives, and thus some things are only to be found in his book. There are many, many factual errors in Gabler's book. A huge list can be found on Barriers's site (Google "GablerErrata"). And as a final note, on that same site, one can read that Diane Disney Miller herself thinks the Gabler book is a gross misrepresentation of her father (Google "Diane_On_Gabler"). So buy both books, read Barrier first, then Gabler, and then make up your own mind!

It was never really about the money...
By J. Green
...well, almost never. Walt Disney was always more interested in "the next thing," and making money on a venture was usually just a way to finance his projects. Initially drawn to drawing and animation but burned by dishonest partners, he created his own studio to produce animated "shorts" - short Mickey Mouse and Silly Symphony cartoons shown before regular feature movies. But he was always pushing for better animation and better quality, eventually creating "Snow White," the first feature-length animated movie, with the best quality animation for the time. But even then, he wasn't breaking even and eventually had to cut corners just to pay the bills, and some movies were made purely to generate income ("Dumbo" and some of the live-action movies). As Walt became bogged down in the studio and trying to make too many movies at once and always striving to create something bigger or better (realism in "Bambi" and high-class art in "Fantasia"), plus with WWII forcing him to rely on government work just to keep going, he became discouraged and turned his attentions elsewhere. As a result, the animation that was once the top in the industry lost it's edge, and Walt became more interested in trains and eventually television and Disneyland. In the end though, Walt left a legacy of memorable characters and family-friendly entertainment.

A very enjoyable biography about one of the most influential people of the 20th century and our present-day culture, although it often bogs down in too much detail about finances. I was surprised that he was always financially strapped and borrowing wherever he could until after Disneyland. But it was especially interesting while reading the book to go back and watch some of the movies, like "Three Little Pigs" and "Snow White" (which I had never really cared for before) and compare the styles, knowing what went into them and what made them great. I even visited Disneyland after reading about it in the book, and noticed some of the details I hadn't before. It certainly gave me a new appreciation for some of the Disney movies, even if he wasn't particularly involved in some of my favorites. But I was also surprised to learn that the genius behind "the happiest place on earth" usually wasn't a very happy man himself. Mr. Gabler describes Walt's constant need to create "control" in his surroundings that drove his efforts at perfection. Animation, his trains, and Disneyland each in turn provided his escape from reality into an environment where he had near-total control.

Most books about Walt Disney either paint him as a saint or an evil tyrant, and I guess he was both. Gabler is careful to point out where the "legends" were embellished, and that "Walt Disney" became more of a brand than a man, but in my opinion he portrayed him fairly and honestly. He didn't shy away from his faults, telling about his ego and the complaints many of his employees had, but he also honestly tried to tell why he did what he did and what motivated him. In the end, if you're looking for a book that only tells the good things or only the bad things, this book will leave you a bit disappointed. But if you want a fair biography that not only documents his numerous accomlishments but shows that he was as human as all of us, I think you'll enjoy this. I did.

No-Cry Versus Crying It Out

Most parents wanting to make changes with their child's sleep have heard all the debates about allowing a child to cry. This has led to a lot of confusion. Some of the methods that promise "no-cry" solutions suggest to parents that their child wonÆt ever cry. The idea is that being ôgentler and more responsiveöùcontinuing to soothe your child by patting, picking her up, holding her hand, and the likeùmeans that she is less traumatized.

Ironically, though, parents often report that the child still cries even while they continue to attend to her; all children protest change, and the way they let us know they don't like the change is to cry. As important as it is for parents to express love to children through physical touch, and as illogical as it may seem that doing so while helping a child learn to sleep is counterproductive, it is indeed the parent's touch that can exacerbate a child's frustration in this scenario. The result? The child often continues to struggle with sleep, usually for weeks or even months, because she is not being allowed to learn how to soothe herself. With older children, using touch can be especially detrimental, as it tempts them to continue testing limits with you, to keep pressing until you cave in and help them to sleep. WeÆve found that when using these kinds of "hands-on" methods, parents often give up on sleep learning because it takes so long to actually get better sleep that the process itself becomes exhausting.

On the other end of the spectrum are the experts who suggest that the fastest way to help a child to sleep is to allow him to "cry it out" in other words, shutting the door and leaving your child completely alone, crying, for as long as it takes him to fall asleep. Also known as full extinction, this method actually does work, and sometimes quite quickly, although we have heard stories of children who have cried for as long as several hours at a stretch on the first night or two, perhaps bewildered and frightened because the usual helpers (namely, you) have disappeared. The idea of a child alone in the dark, crying inconsolably, doesnÆt sit right with most parents, and it doesn't sit right with us, either. It seems unnecessarily hard on both parents and child.

We think experts on both ends of the spectrum are well intentioned, but we also believe that the so-called no-cry solutions focus too much on the parent's and child's emotions and not enough on the necessary conditions for learning, and that the extinction methods focus too much on the child's learning and not enough on the emotional side of sleep learning. This is how we arrived at what we call the "least-cry" approach.

The "Least-Cry" Approach

So if giving your child too much help makes her cry harder and longer, and giving her too little help makes parents (and possibly the child) feel uneasy and overwhelmed, what's left? Finding a balance between allowing your child to learn how to sleep, while lovingly supporting her in the process. Our recipe for successful sleep learning --meaning that children learn to sleep quickly with a minimum of crying--contains two important ingredients:

1. A simple, customized sleep plan that includes step-by-step instructions for scheduling, environmental changes, and helping children change their sleep behavior, and

2. Plenty of support around the emotional aspects of teaching a child to sleep (and some inevitable frustration), to help children continue to feel loved, and to help parents remain consistent as their child learns. Parents who use our methods usually report that their child begins to sleep through the night in less than five nights, because the child receives clear, consistent responses that shape behavior quickly, and because she feels your loving encouragement while she learns. In a matter of days, children learn that they don't need assistance from their parentsùwith a bit of practice they become expert sleepers, and the whole family finally begins to get the rest they need.

Although there are other methods designed to offer parents a "middle-of-the-road" option, we haven't found any that help a child learn as quickly and minimize the crying as effectively as the techniques we use. We believe this is because we offer an equal balance of opportunities for behavioral learning and loving support that doesn't interfere with that learning. In this book, our aim is to give you exactly what a family would get if they were sitting in our office: our expertise, proper tools, and all the emotional support you need.

We'll help you create an organized, fail-proof plan that ensures success--usually in less than five nights. At Sleepy Planet, we've met thousands of parents who are in exactly the same exhausted, barely functioning boat that you're in right now. Happily, your child's (and thus you and your spouse's) sleepless nights will soon feel like a quickly fading bad dream. So hang in there; help has finally arrived! (That would be us, and we're not leaving your side till your child's sleep is much improved. Promise.)

There are seven main "sleep stealers" or reasons your child isn't sleeping well; she may be affected by one of them, by a combination of several, or if you've hit the jackpot, by all seven.

  • SLEEP STEALER #1: No Consistent Bedtime Routine Though most parents know that a bedtime routine is a good idea, it can be hard to be consistent about doing it, either because there's too much to do before bed or because your child has so much energy that it's hard to slow her down. Nonetheless, a predictable wind-down routine is one of the most important tools your child needs to sleep well.
  • There are several important components of a good bedtime routine:
  • Physical activity should come before the routine. If Daddy likes to toss the baby in the air, or your toddler likes to streak naked through the living room, go for it! Just make sure you do these activities before the bath or bedtime routine, when you'll want to start slowing things down.
  • The routine should last 15 to 60 minutes at nighttime, and about 10 to 15 minutes before a nap. The length of your routine will depend partly on the age of your child; a 5-month-old might gum a few pages of a board book, whereas an 18-month-old will enjoy at least one full story.
  • Do your bedtime routine in the same room where your child will be sleeping. It's important that your child spend some time in this space with you, feeling comfortable and relaxed, so the transition into sleep will go smoothly. If you give your child a bath and help him change into PJs in his room, and then return to another part of the house with him for more play or activity, you'll lose the momentum of the wind-down process and will likely find that your child gets a "second wind."
  • Do approximately the same activities each night or at nap time, in the same order.
  • This is what will help your child develop sleep cues, so that over time just doing the routine makes your child sleepy. Wind-down activities can include:

    A bath

    A massage

    Dimming the lights

    Playing soft music

Diaper change and putting on pjÆs

Nursing, a bottle, or a cup of milk

A book or song (or several of each)

Playing quietly on the floor (no toys that beep or blink)

With an older child, talking about your day together

You get the idea. Have fun and be creative; just remember to keep it low-key. Once you've established a consistent routine, anyoneùsitter, grandparents, other familyùshould be able to do exactly what you do to put your child to sleep and have exactly the same results. Mom and Dad are then freed up for a night on the town.

    Imagine that!

This book has made our lives so much better!
    By shelly9226
At first I thought no way was cry it out was for us. However, after spending 5 months with insomnia that I think was due in part to waking up every 2 hours to feed, I came around to the idea. I was pretty apprehensive because up to this point we were nursing to sleep. And of course every time she woke up, I nursed back to sleep as well. We were also co-sleeping. So I was like, this is gonna be too much change at once! No more co-sleeping, no nursing to sleep, night weaning--how is my baby going to handle this? But guess what? She's doing great! And I feel like a whole new person because I'm getting more than 2 hours of sleep at a time!! Just for reference, we started this when my baby was 5 months, 17 pounds. I still do a dream feeding around 10:30. Around 6 she has been waking up and we can tell its her hungry cry so I feed her, but then she has gone back to sleep for 2 hours sometimes. The only pitfall we made was that about after a week she was still crying for about 20 min to put herself to sleep. We realized bed time had just gotten away from us with getting dinner ready and all. But now we make sure to start our routine around 6:30 and bed time at 7:00. Last night, went to sleep no crying! She did wake a couple times, but put herself right back to sleep. Oh also, my husband had a week off from work when we started implementing this so it helped. Really if you're desperate for sleep, and feel like you can no longer function, give this a try. Just make sure you follow all the points in the book and give yourself and your baby ample time to see progress. I didn't ever think she would go to sleep on her own, and one week later it's a miracle!!

We made it work for us
    By Autumn923
Our baby has been waking up every hour to two hours during the night once her 4-month regression hit. We couldn't swaddle her anymore as she was breaking out of it. We tried practically everything... the only way to get her back to sleep was for me to nurse her. It was so exhausting towards the morning I would have to ask my husband to take her out of the room just so I can get a solid hour of sleep in before having to go to work. None of us was getting any decent sleep.

I bought the book based on all the reviews. At first when I read through the book, I got more upset because I didn't think it was for us. My husband and I both work, with my mom as a primary caretaker. There's no way we can put our baby to sleep by 8pm, nearly impossible at 7pm. There's no way we can stick to a consistent time schedule. Furthermore, having to "train" my mom to train our baby is another added stress.

Since nothing was working anyway, we decided to adapt the book's way of putting her to bed at night. We started the first night at 4.5-month-old. She cried a solid one hour with the check-ins, then she slept for 5 hours. That was amazing because the longest stretch of sleep had only been 2.5 hours. The next few nights, we put her to bed the same way with the check-ins. While she would still wake up during the night, it was obvious she has already learn to put herself to sleep. She would fuss a bit for the first 5 to 10 minutes or so, but never any high-pitch crying like the first night. With obvious results, maybe there's something to this. I had a long talk with my mom about her naps schedule. Honestly, it was harder to ask my mom to follow the schedule and the technique. That same night our baby followed the recommended wake time and total nap time needed, she slept for 9 hours waking up 2x to nurse in between. We were so happy.

Our baby is almost 6-month now. We usually start her bedtime routine from 8 to 9pm - bath, nurse, burp, turn on the fan, put her into the co-sleeper, and walk away. She has been consistently sleeping for 3 to 4 hours before waking up to nurse twice during the night. Our goal is definitely getting her to sleep the whole 11 to 12 hours like all the other reviewers said, but for now, we made the book work for us.

Update on 6/17/2015 ~ Oh, I so wanted this book to work for us. We stick a pretty good nap schedule for month 5, and she was only waking up twice a night to nurse. Now she is a bit older than 6 months, it is obvious she doesn't need 3 naps, but my mom refuse to accept that. Unfortunately, it is harder to train my mom than it is to train my baby. If you can work with your caregiver, go for it. Otherwise, the sleep easy solution isn't that easy.

Update on 2/4/2016 ~ Unfortunately I can't say my 14-month-old is sleeping through the night. I have read through countless books, online articles, blogs, etc. Ultimately I gave up on finding any solution. The one common ground for everything I have read is consistency of a schedule. That's one thing we are good about. She naps and eat around the same time. How we get her to nap, that's a different story (between my mom, my husband, my dad, and myself, we all have a different way of putting her to sleep...) But you know what, my daughter is getting better on her own. Like for night weaning, I was trying all these different methods (from this book and other books) without success. One night (maybe around 11 months old), she just stopped. She woke up fussy, but I was too tried to respond. She actually soothed herself back to sleep, and then she hasn't nursed since. She dropped two night feedings on her own. Also, for awhile when she woke up in the middle of the night, we would have to walk/rock her back and forth. Both my husband and I were too tired to response, she soothed herself back to sleep. It has been a long journey, but even though she wakes up twice a night, she put herself back to sleep. It may not be immediate, but she can. That's with us not doing anything. Maybe that's the key, don't try to force anything.

My husband and I are happier because we are sleeping
    By Nicole C
We were having a lot of trouble with our six month old. He would only sleep in our bed or on the couch with one of us, which was not safe and exhausting for my husband and I as well as the baby. In five days we weaned him off night feedings and he was Being put down in his crib awake and going to bed on his own without even crying. He's sleeping 11 1/2 hours through the night and waking twice out of habit but going back to sleep on his own after about five minutes of crying. Each night the time has gone down, so I would assume in a week there will be no night wakings. My husband and I are happier because we are sleeping, but more importantly our son is. He is happy and more alert throughout the day. It can seem a bit overwhelming at first but if you stick to the guide and schedule in the book it will truly be life changing. My only regret is that I didn't buy this book sooner.
