Different Viewpoint

This is an excellent book that I would recommend to anyone seeking answers regarding the disturbing discrepancies in the Bible.

I have found a several good laughs through the years as I watch Christian apologists try to reconcile the different points of view contained within the holy book. It's like watching a game of twister as the positions become more and more ridiculous.

In addition, recent books such as Misquoting Jesus: The Story Behind Who Changed the Bible and Why (Plus)and Jesus, Interrupted: Revealing the Hidden Contradictions in the Bible (And Why We Don't Know About Them) have taken the position that the contradictions do not need defense but should be seen as evidence that the bible should be summarily dismissed as a path to God.

Dr. Helms takes neither of these approaches but rather the course of understanding the writings within their cultural and historical context. This is a refreshing view indeed.

While I will continue to purchase and enjoy the work of Bart Ehrman, I will also keep Dr. Helms on my 'must buy' list for his compelling and educational take on the many mysteries contained within our sacred texts.

Well referenced, solid piece of scholarship

Ever since I had Dr. Helms as a professor at ASU for the Bible As Literature course I have been fascinated with this subject. Helms had such a firm grasp of his knowledge that I knew his books would be engaging and insightful. This book is no exception as he tackled with ease this heavy subject.

He shows us easily where the origins of the Old Testament came from and how the biblia, or books, came to fruition, how the stories are collections of mythologies and folk tales accumulated over hundreds if not thousands of years. What is even more readily apparent is how the New Testament authors raped and pillaged the Jewish Torah, making it the Old Testament, in order to form and create the New Testament and show that Jesus is the messiah prophesied many years before. The problem, and Helms makes this extremely clear, is that the books were not eyewitness accounts, except for maybe Mark, who would have been very young, and so everything is written from second, third and so on perspective. The gospels were that specific authors beliefs and dreams on how everything should have happened, ultimately hoping to usurp all the written work and leave theirs as the authority. In editing, changing, attacking each gospel and writing it how they believed it to be so they ultimately showed, through the many varied contradictions, that the bible is nothing more than a collection of fictional stories.

Additionally, Helms touches upon prophecies and how each author handled them. They were given credence and power because it seemed that what they were writing upon actually did come true, when in fact it is the author re-writing the history of their past and passing it off as though they are predicting the future hundreds of years down the road. Daniel predicted the apocalypse would come with Alexander the Great and the schism of his empire. But when that didn't happen it had to be re-written, this time to reflect the Roman empire and the fall of Jerusalem during the Jewish-Roman wars. When that didn't happen it was re-written again, again. Thus is prophecy and will continue to be when related to religion.

For the nay-sayers all I can say is read the book. Helms doesn't make claims without support. His book is heavily referenced so that you yourself could go those sections of the bible and see for yourself. Helms makes a very convincing argument and is so well supported that only the blind would not be able to see the truth behind his scholarship. Although this is perhaps a bit brief and could do well as a much larger book, I would certainly recommend this book to anyone interested, and if you attend ASU I would definitely recommend taking his classes.

*Side note: I noticed the tags that people have entered for this and it is kind of funny. Atheist: Is this simply because he studied the bible more so than Christians have and actually read it for what it was? Because Helms is in fact a practicing Christian (Presbyterian if I remember correctly). Someone who criticizes the bible or points out inaccuracies is most certainly not an atheist from that alone. Same goes for Skeptic and Skepticism. Holocaust? Huh?*

The book is an excellent read well written without annoying anyone except fundamentalist that might get insulted. It is divided into 10 Chapter, each of them dealing with a different but very interesting topic.

This is a short but very compelling book that should be on every serious religion researcher.

More Substantial Than Expected

I expected this book to be more of a "boy's own" Revolutionary War adventure, with lots of skulking and escapades and running about in the woods, while characters like Paul Revere and Samuel Adams flitted about in the background, and great liberties were taken with the historical record. I was wrong. As it turned out, this was more historically accurate, pithier, and more dramatic than one could hope. Johnny Tremain is more complex and sharp edged and the adult characters are more finely presented than usual for an historical adventure. This is much more like a dramatization of Forbes' straight nonfiction than it is an adventure romance actioner. As a consequence it is both more demanding and more rewarding for a young reader. An interesting choice for a mature young historical fiction reader.

This book is amazing! The testimonies on how praying Psalm 91 has impacted lives are modern day miracles. This is a must read for those who have loved ones in the military. A naval sailor and his Mom had a pact to pray Psalm 91 at the same time every day. Well, his sub was under attack at the time he was supposed to start praying. A torpedo was headed straight at the sub. He started to pray Psalm 91 as was his Mom wherever she was and the torpedo veered off at the last moment unexplainably. Psalm 91 has been prayed to protect families from natural disasters like tornadoes, protect children from criminal assaults, etc. This book is a beautiful reminder of how much God loves us and cares for us.

Superb Book! You'll Be Glad You Got It

I came across this book last August and was drawn to it. Once I purchased I couldn't put it down. I've since bought several copies for friends and family and their reaction has been the same. Whether you are a soldier or Marine going into combat, a cop or a fireman or just a family person concerned about your protection and that of your family, you'll want to read this book. Peggy Joyce Ruth has assembled many inspirational stories of veterans and several policemen and firemen and explained how their use of this Psalm has kept them from harm when they went 'in harm's way'. Some of the stories from the Iraq veterans are absolutely miraculous. Do yourself and your family a favor; get this book, read and start praying your own Psalm 91 covenant everyday. You'll be glad you did.

"Psalm 91" by Peggy Joyce Ruth contains "Real-Life Stories of God's Shield of Protection and What This Psalm Means For You and Those You Love..." This amazing book has several valuable features. The beginning of the book breaks down the psalm in such a way that enables the reader to understand the passage, itself. This section is followed by a series of testimonies of God's protection being lived out in real-life circumstances. The end of the book contains the psalm itself, written as a prayer, with blanks inserted where the name of a loved one would go.

This wonderful work of non-fiction is more than a Bible study. It is a source of encouragement that gives examples of how these verses of scripture became alive and active to others so that we can be on the lookout for similar evidences of God's provision and protection for us. This book helped open my eyes to the truth of scripture and motivated me to watch for God's protection activity in my own life. It has also given me a beautiful prayer to say over others. I highly recommend this book.

Nice thick catalog

[[VIDEOID:28186381]]This is a very simple book. It's a catalog of logos -- the logo, the designer and logo's company.

The categorization is by logotypes, letters, wordmarks, initials, typographic elements, symbols, abstract and representational. Under these are future categorization. Please view the picture below large to get an idea because it's hard to explain.

The collection of logos featured are primarily printed in black and white in this book. The lead in page however, has the logos (small), in color.

That's pretty much about this book. Oh, and it's thick at 350 pages, more so because it's printed on 160gsm (I guess) matt paper.

Excellent with reservations

This is a nicely conceived book but has a few problems. None of which stopped me from buying it!
The design and typography used to differentiate sections of the book (groups and categories in the book or classifications of types of symbols, logotypes, signatures, etc.) is difficult to use. If the actual type and design to differentiate these sections had been more clearly done, the book would have been much more useful and leveraged one of its greatest assets. (So, whoever designed the book made that mistake!)
The last section of the book is on multiple solutions used for one identity. This is in contrast to most identity design which uses only one logo or symbol (Apple, Nike, 99% of the book).
This multiple identity solution (sorry, the author calls it something else but I don't have the book with me at home while I write this) is a trend that is emerging slowly over the past 10-15 years. But the coverage in this book is very thin. There are a number of other examples of this method which are not included. I wish there was more on this.
One thing I would like to have seen more of is deeper historical context of identities. More text on, about, why, and who of each or most of the designs. Right now, it is just a picture collection.
Not so much a flaw but something to consider - This book has the greats. Old and newer and very new. But it also has some real silly stinker examples. You wonder, why is that logo in here? For example: the ugly reworking of the UPS logotype shield. Why include this? (and I am not a fan of Paul Rands original although, it would have been far better to included for historical impact purposes)
Indeed, this is the bible and shows the good, the bad, and the ugly but all on a level playing field.

Great reference

As a design student, I have been looking for a book that has collection of logo to reference and analyze. This book is a great reference to see logos that are substantial and corporate. It contains logos that are well known to small. Also, most of all the logos are in black and white which I find it better to understand the form.

Amazing

In my opinion, this is one of THE top three Beatles books ever written (along with Mark Lewisohn's "Recording Sessions" and the Anthology book). The amount of information in this book is simply jaw-dropping. (Do not confuse this book with Geoff Emerick's similarly titled book. While Geoff's is a good read, it has some accuracy issues and isn't nearly as detailed as this book.)

Recording The Beatles is definitely aimed at technically curious readers and contains everything you'd want to know about how they recorded at Abbey Road - all the equipment, microphones, mixers, outboard equipment, etc. It tells how they created ADT and flanging and echo chambers, etc. It's basically like a textbook for a college level class about recording at Abbey Road in the 1960's. But the last half of the book would easily be enjoyed by fans that aren't technical at all. It talks about how specific songs were recorded and makes you listen to them in a completely different way. You will hear things you never heard before. I believe this is a must-have book for any serious Beatles fan. The quality of the book is beyond belief, and it comes with a bunch of little extras (a "tape box" slipcover that looks like an old EMI tape box, a poster of the mixer controls, the handwritten lyrics for "A Day In the Life". etc...) Amazing.

I will say - the price that is being asked on this site seems a bit excessive, considering the book is still in print and available for half that price from the publisher's site.

Obsessive

This book isn't an account of how recording sessions went, in and about the lads themselves. It's a highly technical, and an extremely involved look at the equipment and processes that went into the making of the beatles records. Fans who are looking for stories about that time John took LSD and wandered up to the roof should read "here there and everywhere" by Geoff Emerick.

This book includes many wonderful pictures and like I said, extremely detailed views of equipment, and let me tell you brother, there is nary a stone that remains unturned. Everything, EVERYTHING that I've ever wanted to know about Abby Road (and for that matter all of the other studios that they ever worked at), and it's contents and personnel is presented in complete detail.

Some of the equipment includes but is not limited to: Ambiophony, the Curvebender, REDD desks, Fairchild and Altec compressors, and Automatic double tracking. Examples of how and when these components are used is given to the exact second that they appear in the song.

The list of Mics is again, obsessive, and far more than enough to make any gear head drool.

Reading this book isn't something that one does all in a row, and if you're a recording buff, there's a plenty to learn.

Another book that complements this that hasn't been mentioned in the previous reviews is entitled Beatles Gear by Andy Babiuk. Another great, if obsessive book that I continue to enjoy immensely.

simply jaw-dropping

you simply have to experience this book for yourself. weighing in at 11 pounds, it is by far the most extensive tome written on the beatles recording process. curvebender is currently (april '09)shipping the deluxe edition for $100, so don't pay any more than that. they also claim they're coming out with a paperback version that'll be much less expensive. but the the quality of the "deluxe" printing, in my opinion, makes it well worth the price.
