About the Author
Gerard Voland has taught design for 20 years and pioneered an innovative, nationally recognized freshman design course at Northeastern University. In 1994 he was named the George A. Snell Professor of Engineering in appreciation for his work with this freshman design course and with engineering curriculum reform at Northeastern. He is also the author of textbooks on engineering graphics and control systems modeling. He lives in in Bridgewater, Massachusetts, with his wife, Margaret Voland, a mathematician who researched and developed the case problems in this book.

Rationale for the Text

Engineering by Design is intended to serve a multiplicity of functions while conveying the excitement and sheer fun of solving technical problems in creative yet practical ways. It provides an introduction to the engineering profession through numerous case histories that illustrate various aspects of the design process. This is important because students can come to appreciate the interdisciplinary aspects of engineering problem solving as they work with case problems or review case histories in design which demonstrate (sometimes in a very startling but effective manner) valuable lessons in engineering practice.

Many engineering colleges are continuing to revise their curricula in response to the ABET 2000 accreditation requirements. Various design and manufacturing topics are being integrated more into undergraduate engineering programs, and new mechanisms for delivering this course material are being developed with a general focus upon experiential learning by undergraduates. Engineering by Design has been developed as an aid for these important efforts. It is written in a way that I hope will be both engaging and accessible to students while maintaining the accuracy and rigor that one would expect of an engineering textbook.

Freshmen and sophomores often have little substantive knowledge of professional engineering practice; indeed, these students may have many misconceptions about the actual work that engineers perform and the types of problems with which they wrestle. The initial chapters and case histories of this book will give students a limited but informed understanding of the engineering profession. Later material (including case problems through which students can apply their newly acquired knowledge of design) then broadens and deepens this understanding, and this material can be used in a wide variety of courses including senior capstone project classes. A list of appropriate courses is given later in this preface.

Through this approach, students discover the need to

• formulate problems correctly
• work successfully in interdisciplinary teams
• develop their creativity, imagination, and analytical skills
• make informed ethical decisions
• hone their written and oral communication skills

Most important, they learn that engineering is a service profession, dedicated to satisfying humanity's needs through responsible, methodical, and creative problem solving.

This second edition of Engineering by Design includes expanded coverage of several important topics, including teamwork skills and tools, Gantt charts, problem formulation strategies, engineering graphics and sketching, and creativity stimulation techniques. Moreover, numerous additional case histories have been incorporated into the text.

Structure Case Histories

Engineering By Design introduces students to such critical design topics as needs assessment, problem formulation, modeling, patents, abstraction and synthesis, economic analysis, product liability, ergonomics, engineering ethics, hazards analysis, design for X, materials selection, and manufacturing processes. The engineering design process provides the skeletal structure for the text, around which are wrapped numerous case histories that illustrate both successes and failures in engineering design.

According to Larry Richards, Director of the Center for Computer Aided Engineering at the University of Virginia, engineering cases generally fall into one of three categories. They are case studies, case histories, and case problems. A case study presents an ideal or benchmark solution that may serve as a model for future work. In contrast, a case history describes how a problem was solved, and points out the consequences of the decisions that were made. This text contains numerous case histories; the more extensive ones have been collected at the end of each chapter so that they will not interrupt the flow of material in the chapters. Each case history has been selected to illustrate a particular principle, procedure, or lesson in the text. Students and faculty can use these case histories as important resources for study, reflection, and discussion.

Design Project Assignment Template

The text ends with a unique Design Project Assignment Template (immediately following Chapter 11) that the instructor can use to select and assign tasks to students who are working on a design project. With this template, instructors can directly correlate their students' efforts on a project with appropriate material from each chapter of this text. Of course, not all assignments need to be performed; the template provides a "menu" from which instructors can select tasks and topics that they wish to emphasize.

This template also provides an abbreviated summary of the text with key concepts highlighted in bold type. Students can use this template to review and correlate the critical elements of the design process as they develop an overall perspective of the material presented throughout the text. If a term or concept in the template is not understood completely, the student should recognize that lack of understanding or comfort with the concept as a warning flag. The student should then return to the (referenced) section in the text in which the concept is discussed and study further. Through such efforts, the template can serve as an important learning aid. A sample section of the design template is shown in Figure P.1

Case Problems

Finally, a case problem sets forth an open-ended (perhaps unsolved) situation that leaves the solution up to the reader. It can be a learning module designed to put students to work in teams to define the problem and solve it through research, discussion, and/or lab work. Four extended case problems have been prepared for use as active learning modules; they follow the Design Project Assignment Template. Each of these case problems contains a substantial amount of background information, as well as proposed or existing solutions, so that students will be able to "hit the ground running" if any of these problems is chosen for a design project.

Moreover, these case problem modules serve as examples of the depth, breadth, and type of information that one should acquire about a technical problem before embarking upon the development of a design solution. The background material in each problem provides sufficient information to understand the general parameters and factors that must be considered during a design effort; however, students should seek additional information beyond that contained in the case problems.

Immediately following the four case problems is a list of 50 case problem topics, which describe situations that call for engineering design solutions. Since these descriptions are very brief, students will need to research the background and current status of each situation. Again, the four extended case problem modules described above can serve as examples of the type of background data that should be collected via such research.

Informative book for class

If you are taking an engineering design class or working on an engineering design project then this book is helpful and informative. There are a lot of relevant case studies and design processes outlined that can be useful as you consider the important components of your design. So far my design group has used some of the procedures in the book to help clarify primary design goals and specifications we need to consider as we begin to plan our design. If you are just looking for a fun and interesting read about engineering design, then this probably is not the right book for you though.

I needed this book for class and ordered it fairly lst minute. It arrived promtly and although it was not in the pristine condition that "very good" condition books often are, the price was low and I am pleased.

Extensive study of civilizational enigmas

This lavishly illustrated book examines many unanswered questions about our ancestors and their way of life. It uncovers inexplicable enigmas and riddles that defy scientific explanation, considering the various interpretations of the meaning of these phenomena and their place in the complex puzzle of history and prehistory.

The utterly absorbing text is enhanced by impressive full-colour illustrations, maps and photographs. Although the volume is meant for the general reader, it is quite in-depth and much more than just a coffee table book.

The chapters:

In Search Of Ancient Worlds investigates the myth of Atlantis in the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, the search for Eldorado, the Queen of Sheba and the forgotten discoverers of the New World.

The Stone Giants looks at dolmens, menhirs, Corsican statues, Stonehenge and Easter Island.

Cities Of Mystery deals with Teotihuacan, the Indus Valley civilization, Tihuanaco, the cities of Catal Huyuk, Jericho and other ancient urban settlements.

Mysteries remain mysterious

Perhaps the most valuable use of this book is it's ability to provoke thought. Evidence is presented. Perhaps the author's prose is hinted at. But the ultimate answers are your's alone. I respect this unbiased presentation of facts. Not having the explanations as being the unquestioned fact.
This publication is definately a useful history book. My personal interests have been in the pre- Columbus settlers to the North American continent. Western history books are very biased to European history. Any discovery extending the idea that other peoples visited and lived here before Erikson or Columbus is considered a "major find". It's only logical that other civilizations were here before the Europeans came. In fact, it's quite proposterous to believe that only the Europeans found this continent. With this mindset, much of the overall *world's* history has been lost.
This book was published in 1978 by the respectful "Reader's Digest Association". During the last 30 years, there have been many discoveries that would only seem to enhance this book's findings. I found this book to be very educational, as well as entertaining. It is now "OUT OF PRINT", but can be had for such a low cost, it's well worth it.

The 320-pages of READER'S DIGEST - THE WORLD'S LAST MYSTERIES contain twin columns of text and well over 200 mostly-color photos and illustrations. First published in 1974, concise and far-ranging, this oversized, glossy-stock volume is recommended for all interested in ancient history. One highlight is a "Gazetteer" which contains a few paragraphs each on dozens of sites.

The essence of true leadership is revealed

This is a most unusual book on leadership. The premise here is not about leadership approaches, methodologies for managing employees in the workplace, or other business strategy, but is instead a close and powerful look at how we view others and how that view impacts our ability to lead them.
The first unusual aspect of this book is the manner in which it is written. It is basically a novel. It starts with contextual story written in first person, of a man who has recently joined a successful company as an executive and is called in to meet personally with the Company senior leader. From the first few pages I was anticipating and wanting to know what would happen next. It is within this method that the leadership principles are revealed. This is an extremely important way to deliver a message. I know a few people who do not read novels, but stick to non-fiction types of books. This is a tremendous loss, as truth is most eloquently and powerfully conveyed within the context of a story. In the New Testament for example, Jesus taught most powerfully in parables, weaving truth into a common story people could relate to. In that manner this book weaves some powerful messages about leadership into a modern day parable of a business executive.
The concept presented in this book of what leadership is, is also a more unusual one in that the focus is not on "what" we do behaviorally to others, our outward leadership style, as most leadership books focus on, but rather our inward view of these individuals as people. The foundational question is whether we are "in the box" or not. "In the box" refers generally to viewing others as objects through our own biased lens, which often without our knowledge inflates our self-importance while diminishing theirs. When reading this story I couldn't help but draw parallels to companies I have worked for, like GE, where the culture of leadership was in place, but despite all the tools most managers were not effective delivering them. This book will give one explanation on why.
This book is personally challenging, in that the focus is not on how we act in that compartment of our lives called work, but rather who we are in relation to others in our family, our workplace, and strangers in our society. I think that the message here should be experienced, so I will not lay out all the components of the book, but rather encourage you to read to be likewise challenged about your own leadership and approach to others.
One other review here I noticed was titled "could be life changing". I agree. While the basic concept is not new, the packaging of this idea is so eloquently and powerfully done, that I would guess you may also experience some awareness bursts as I did while reading it. I found myself re-examining many aspects of how I lead my team at work, how I interact with peers and co-workers, and how I related to my wife. Simply put, a great book on leadership that would benefit anyone who reads it. Well done.

Game-Changer

Leadership and Self Deception was originally published in 2000 and has become an international bestseller with over 750,000 copies sold & translated into 22 languages. The book tells a story about a senior business executive who is struggling at the office and at home. (He doesn't know he's struggling professionally to optimize results - but he quickly learns this is the case.)

* This is a simple story, with a logical message. Yet, the story nicely explains that we all often fail to see that we have a problem. We do engage in self-deception. We do "unwittingly sabotage relationships at work and at home." And our actions do provoke a response that encourages the opposite of our intention.

* Part I explains "Self-Deception and the Box." Part II explains "How We Get In the Box." Part III explains "How We Get Out of the Box." Being "In the box" is seeing others as objects. "Out of the Box" is seeing yourself and others as people. (They make this come alive in the book.)

* As I was reading the book, particularly Part I and Part II, I was impressed at how they framed the narrative and discussion to make me realize how I've been deceiving myself. Several "AHA" moments here. Rather than give too much of the story line away - they use a simple example of a Business Executive sleeping and then hearing his infant crying - he knows that he should get up to help his spouse - he doesn't - he then justifies not getting up by mentally elevating his importance (he needs to get up early in the morning; he's the main bread winner; he's a good dad; he's the victim) while he mentally frames up his spouse who isn't getting up as being lazy, unappreciative, inconsiderate, etc. He elevates his own importance over his wife; he rationalizes why he is justified in not getting up to help the baby; he gets angry and this ultimately leads to a response which is opposite to what he was looking for. Even though no words are spoken.

* The "answer" will not be found in a new leadership strategy. It will not be found in developing a new communication skill or changing your behavior. It will not be found in trying to change someone to your way of thinking. The answer is changing "your way of being."

* I'm not a fan of parables because I have often found this format either too contrived or generally not relevant to me. Yet, I believe this story, the message and the anecdotes are universally applicable and true and will resonate with many readers.

* The < 200 page book is a quick and easy read. It should take you less than 3 hours.

* While the book is framed in a business context, it will benefit all readers: leaders, non-leaders, professionals and individuals in for-profits and non-for-profits.

* Any cons? I have two "nits." (1) You reach the end of the book to learn that Part II (Accountability Transformation System) and Part III (Monitoring System) are not discussed or included in the book and you would need to enroll in Arbinger's seminars to learn this. This was a bit deceptive and unnecessary in my opinion as the core message in the book remains powerful. They should have stripped these references from the story and included it in the appendix. (2) Later editions of the book were revised to include a section on "How to Use Leadership and Self-Deception" including hiring, team building, conflict resolution, accountability and personal growth and development. This section added very little utility - but again, it does not detract from the value of the book.

* So many self-help books leave no lasting value or impression - you get a quick high (if you are lucky) and the message evaporates. Not this one. This one will stick. Highly recommended.

Very simple, very good

I hate business books. Hate them.

My parents and siblings practically insisted I read Stephen Covey's jargon-rich "The Seven Habits..." and I got as far as something about the "P/PC principle" before deciding I'd had too much. Just seeing print ads for "Who moved my cheese?" makes me want to vomit.

That said, this is not really a business book. It's a book about truly being a better person, and by being a better person, being a better spouse, parent, boss, friend, citizen, and employee. The whole concept of the book is one simple idea: treat people as if they're people, not as if they're objects.

Some car cuts you off in traffic?

Get mad!

No. A car didn't cut you off. A person did. Why? Why would a person do that? Have YOU yourself ever cut someone off? You did? Why did you?

"Well, I was in a hurry. I was late for an appointment...."

Well, maybe that guy was too....

Using this simple approach, the world can be a much nicer place, you can spend a lot less time being angry or frustrated, and you could end up liking people a lot more.

Unlike books like "How to Win Friends and Influence People," this book is not about tricks, or flattery, or social politics. It's about truly seeing people as real individuals, and then, it doesn't matter what you need to say to them, as long as they can tell you realize they're a real human being with real needs and concerns. Because to truly see someone, is to truly value them.

This book isn't perfect--it uses some pretty fruity terminology at times, its format of a boss talking with an employee is a little cheesy, and it ends abruptly--but it could change your life nonetheless. One reviewer said, "Upon finishing this book, I felt like Ebeneezer Scrooge on Christmas morning," and I'd have to agree.

In fact, I'm going to re-read it, and get that feeling back again.

I Am the 102nd Miracle of This Form of Healing

Qigong (pronounced "chee gong") has been the cornerstone of healing in China for over three millennia. The challenge for those of us in the West has been finding access to this healing method. Chinese qigong instructors kept their techniques hidden--and they only taught a small number of acolytes their secrets. The book 101 Miracles of Natural Healing by Luke Chan takes one into the world of the #1 healing qigong method used in China. Luke Chan interviews 101 people that practice four ChiLel Qigong forms, which are explained in detail in the back of the book. The book makes it so you can begin right away practicing this healing technique for yourself no matter what your physical condition, as well as giving encouragement through the stories. There is a lot of wisdom in each story. The people interviewed talk about what they visualize as they practice, as well as the emotional and physical challenges as they conquer their illnesses. Great recipes

If you are on the 21-day fix you know only too well just how hard it is to find recipes that contain food from the approved ingredients list as well as correct container counts. Lately, I have been cooking from a standard cookbook and then spending AGES trying to add everything up. So as soon as I stumbled across this book, I knew I had to get it.

So far I have already made the 5-minute chocolate pecan brownies and the baked zucchini, turkey bacon and tomato frittata and I must say that I am very impressed so far! Tomorrow I will be trying out the chocolate avocado mousse and the breadless burgers and I hope they turn out just as good. The fact that all of the recipes appear to be gluten free is also a major bonus for me personally.

Overall, I am very happy with the book and hope to see more from the author.

This is a "coach" trying to make money off the ideas of someone who designed this plan. You can get all these and more by reading the plan, purchasing the book, and/or figuring it out yourself.......btw.....all of these are available for free online through beach body and Pinterest. shame on this person

Happy I bought this.

This is a pretty good book. It gave me some great ideas and included the cup counts which is won-der-ful (since I'm too lazy to figure things out myself and end up eating boring food as a result!). It's very simple. It would be better with photos, of course, but for less than $5 at a time when I needed 21DF ideas, it was perfect! Recipes are easy to follow and ingredients mostly easy to find.

About the Author

Curt Bartol earned a PhD in Personality/Social Psychology from Northern Illinois University. He was then a psychology professor for over 30 years, teaching a wide array of both graduate and undergraduate courses, including Criminal Behavior, Biopsychology, Social Psychology, Introduction to Forensic Psychology, Juvenile Delinquency, and Psychology and Law. He was instrumental in creating and launching a Master’s Program in Forensic Psychology at Castleton State College (now Castleton University) and served as its director for six years. He is a licensed clinical psychologist who has offered psychological services to local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies and public safety offices for over 35 years. He was editor of the scholarly journal Criminal Justice and Behavior for 17 years.   

 

Anne Bartol earned an M.A. in Journalism from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and an M.A. and PhD in Criminal Justice from the State University of New York at Albany. Over a 20-year college teaching career she taught criminal justice, sociology, and journalism courses, including Criminology, Juvenile Justice, Corrections, Women and Criminal Justice, Occupational Crime, and Media Law. She was managing editor of Criminal Justice and Behavior and has worked as a news reporter and a social worker in family and child protective services.

 

In addition to individual published articles in journals and encyclopedias, the Bartols have collaborated on and co-authored five books through multiple editions—with each subsequent edition carefully updated to reflect changes in data, research findings, theories, and law. Besides Criminal Behavior in its Eleventh Edition, they have written: Juvenile Delinquency (Third Edition, 2009); Psychology and Law (Third Edition, 2015); Introduction to Forensic Psychology (Fourth Edition, 2015); and Criminal and Behavioral Profiling (First Edition, 2013). They also have co-edited a book of readings, Current Perspectives in Forensic Psychology and Criminal Behavior (Fourth Edition, 2016).

Required reading for PSU Criminal Justice Course

Kindle version is very useful for using for class, as it supports full-text search - which is extremely useful during research for papers or open-book tests.

The content of the book... it's for class, so you have to get it.

In my opinion, however, the Bartol's seem to explain away all sense of personal responsibility for criminal acts - these criminals are never a criminal by choice - it's always some external factor that drove them to criminal behavior. Granted the book is a discussion of why criminals become criminals, in the process, it seems to skip over the fact that some people simply want to be one.

Journalist Conley examines the implications of brand-centric marketing in an incisive investigation that illustrates how defenseless consumers are against advertising—on any given day, they are assaulted by 3,000 to 5,000 ads and branding stratagems that subtly dictate every aspect of their lives. Harnessing scientific innovations, branding has become increasing insidious—whether it is the Xbox audio logo or Southwest Airlines' incorporation of the fasten seatbelt sound in their marketing campaign—consumers are being conditioned to think in brands. Beyond ad creep and product placement in entertainment programming, viral and word of mouth (WOM) marketing now make even personal recommendations suspect. According to Conley, 1% of American children and 7% of mothers are compensated for participating in WOM marketing. Even social policy is being corrupted—the author asserts that public branding initiatives such as post-Katrina New Orleans' allocation of public funds toward refurbishing its Mardi Gras City image rather than addressing its safety issues shifts resources away from problem-solving in favor of perception. About the Author
Lucas Conley, who began his career at The Atlantic Monthly, is a contributing writer for Fast Company. His work has appeared in The Boston Globe and ESPN: The Magazine, among other publications. Obsessive Branding Disorder is his first book. He lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Mind blowing book

Wanna learn some marketing schemes, read this book and you be amazed to the world of marketing and how it functions.

More fluff than substance

The book was well written and somewhat entertaining. It was interesting for the first couple chapters, then went downhill quick. The biggest drawback was that the substance of the book feel off after the first couple chapters. After that, it was a lot of rehashing the same stuff. Not a bad book, just not a great one.

Conley's little book on the use and abuse of branding to sell products and services.

This was a great book. It was short (only 200 pages), but the type was small and the margins were reasonable. It's an investigative piece. The author is not a marketing expert or a writer trying to promote a marketing firm or whatever. This is a simple book that explores the status of marketing today. It questions whether the US culture has become obsessed with brands rather than quality products and new improved products.

The author says at some point that he was thoroughly amused by the extreme examples of branding he saw. And he believes the world is cheapened when EVERYONE sees it with a marketer's eye. I agree. But this book is good because it points out that branding is used AND ABUSED as a tool to sell goods and services today. A lot more use and a lot less abuse would be good!

This book informs us that successful marketers today create loyal customers who are lazy minded and don't think much before they buy. They just stick to the brand that they have learned to trust and believe in. Once a company creates a successful brand, then they milk it for all it's worth.

This book has an introduction and 9 chapters. Examine the Search Inside material provided by Amazon to see the chapter titles. I thought the book was written well and well outlined. 5 stars!
