Amazing book, just amazing.It arrived quite quickly, vis USPS & well packed in a USPS box.
I had bought my BRILLIANT RED ATLAS 150 WELLLNESS PASTA MACHINE, without knowing how to make a variety of the Worlds Perfect Pasta Doughs.. I am astounded at the varierty of dough recipes, and the multiple step by step (breath by breath) photos helping you, hand by hand, thru the process...& giving you full page/plate photos of the finished products..You can almost see the heat rising from the plate, smell the aromas.. I cannot wait to use this book. At the time I ordered this book, I bought the LAST ONE Amazon had.

Best Cookbook for Beginner's

This book has everything a beginner could want, easy, clear instructions, lot's have how-to illustrations and a very nice selection of recipes. It covers everything pasta. I bought it used, the best $14 I have spent in years. I spent 4 yrs in Italy and traveled extensively throughout the country, still, there are sauces I never even heard of or tried. There are so many pasta and sauce recipes, I can't wait to try or that I now know how to make.I really look forward to the weekends because it's the only time I really have to try everything. Even though my kitchen is a messy disaster area by Sunday evening, I am having fun!

Molly Drake, a would-be photojournalist, accompanies a U.S. Army-led search for the bones of a pilot shot down during the war. She meets Duncan O'Brian, an archeologist at a local dig, and John Kleat, who has come back to the country repeatedly, seeking his brother's remains. When bones unexpectedly turn up, Molly photographs them, breaking her agreement with the army not to take pictures of bodies. The captain in charge dismisses her along with O'Brian and Kleat, and the trio make their way to an ancient, fog-enshrouded Angkor-like city where they have evidence an army patrol went missing years ago. They soon find themselves lost in a labyrinth of ancient stone, in circumstances that quickly grow as dire as those in which the patrol evidently found itself. Long's considerable knowledge of Cambodian folklore and history is put to good use as he superbly depicts the war-scarred country, its people and its beautiful, hazardous landscape—lush, verdant, strewn with land mines, studded by bones. Although the inner lives of the characters are not as detailed as they could have been, the author's use of supernatural elements is subtle and effective, and adds an extra dimension to this solid, coolly told, smoothly paced narrative.

A dark and surreal trip into the timeless heart of Cambodia

Jeff Long has a talent for not just painting a location with his words, but painting the actual feeling of the surroundings, drawing out in literary fashion the overwhelming mysticism and dread that permeate the very fabric of his physical realms.

Free lance journalist Molly Drake, on assignment for her big break with the Times, travels to modern day Cambodia to photograph and report on the U.S. Military's efforts to excavate the site of a plane crash back in the 1970's, hoping to find the remains of the pilot.

She joins the team, along with two other civilians, an archeologist named Duncan O'Brian who specializes in temple restorations, and John Kleat, a development contractor who makes annual pilgrimages to Cambodia in hopes of finding the remains of his long lost brother. She also meets an old, one-legged Khmer named Samnang who is the work boss on the excavation site.

She spends a month with the RE-1 unit, enchanted by the strange morning people who wander through the early mists, and by an odd gypsy boy who skirts the site like a feral dog. But when she finds American remains in a deep well, she and the other civilians are evicted from the site and sent home. While having dinner at a local restaurant with Duncan and Kleat, the gypsy boy shows up with American dog tags and says he can lead them to the burial site. Taking Samnang and three local brothers, the three set off to find out if what the gypsy boy promised was true.

A long drive through the night, past a strange rain of tiny frogs, they discover ancient ruins buried deep inside the Cambodian forest, primitive and eerie, dating far before any of the ruins Duncan has studied. Conflict begins immediately, with Kleat insisting their focus be on uncovering the missing men, Duncan wanting to explore the strange city, and the locals hired by Samnang wanting to plunder the relics.

It doesn't take long to discover that there is something strangely alive about this ancient place, and Molly is determined to find out what it is, in spite of the rising tensions and the threat from both a typhoon and the upcoming monsoons. She will uncover more than her story here, finding answers to her quest for her real parents and to the strange behaviors of her companions.

Just as Long did with his previous work, `The Descent', he is able to paint a mystical atmosphere that literally comes alive with its creeping mists, sultry humidity, aggressive growth, and mystical ruins that crouch under the canopy of the lush jungles. I could feel the atmosphere, the sense of urgency, the dread, and the excitement that pulls Molly deep into mysterious puzzle of the missing soldiers and the city itself.

Jeff Long is proving himself to be one of my favorite authors, someone I can compare to Michael Crichton with his ability to make me grab up a hardcopy the minute it is released. Enjoy!

Good Old-Fashioned Thrills

When I read The Reckoning, I was impressed. Jeff Long is always to my taste, but with this book he hits a stride. There are fewer story threads than usual (usual for the detail-oriented Long, that is)and the result is a very readable, taut book that still contains plenty of plot. His characters are likable and the adventure into jungle ruins is eerie and fascinating.

Long creates compelling imagery, beautiful or horrifying, and, as always, there's an impending sense of the paranormal to his words, an air of more surrounding the characters than they can see or fathom. This author understands that what we don't see is more frightening than what we do. . . And whether or not something anomalous exists within any Long book is irrelevant. His style haunts.

For me, The Reckoning is the most satisfying of his books. It gave me what I crave most and I didn't even see it coming. When that happens, it's time to eat that cake, not just have it.

But wait, there's more! The cherry on top: I finished The Reckoning and immediately read Scott Smith's much-touted The Ruins. Essentially, it's the same story, but The Reckoning absolutely blows The Ruins out of the water. While The Ruins is a page-turner, it doesn't satisfy and it's difficult to care if the characters live or die. The Reckoning is a good old-fashioned science/adventure thriller with three-dimensional characters to care about. That's what works for me.

These Bones Are Made For The Reckoning

After reading Jeff Long's last book, "Year Zero", I ordered this book right away. Jeff Long has the ability to fuse the natural and supernatural without going over the top, but still capture the reader's imagination. Once again he has successfully pulled off another exciting book in "The Reckoning"!

At first, I was a little leery about this book. The subject matter of recovering soldier remains in Cambodia, didn't seem all that interesting to me, until I started reading futher in the book. I was so engaged in the book during my night time reading, I wouldn't get to sleep until 1 or 2 in the morning.

This was an excellent book to read. The last few chapters of the book kind of reminded me of the movie, "Sixth Sense", if you enjoyed that movie, you will enjoy this book.

ISAO YOSHIKAWA
Born in Tokyo in 1940. Graduated from the Architecture Department of Shibaura Technical University. He established the Japan Garden Research Association in 1963. Presently chairperson of the Association. The honorary president of the Suzhou Society for study of Landscape & Gandens, China. The honorary president of the Hangzhou Society for study of Landscape & Gardens, China. He plays an active part as a scholar of Japanese gardens. a garden architect, a designer of stone art objects, etc.

Fence diagrams range from simple see-through fences to more complex bamboo screening fences. The diagrams, techniques, and instructions for building different types of bamboo fences are clear, complete, easy to follow and even include tips on how to correct any problems you may have in construction. I turned an open work bamboo fence diagram into a trellis for my climbing rose bush in one afternoon. Whether you are looking to build simple edgings for garden paths or a full-screen fence - this is the book to use.

This is a Great book for bamboo lovers. Especially if you have access to the waste branches .I can't wait to do more with those! The more ideas here you try....the more the fever grips you.....Possiblities endless!

Lots of pictures with great informative diagrams, inspiratinal ideas and plans as well as info on how to harvest and preserve poles. I like to fire harden....but watch out for explosions!

An Extremely Enjoyable Read

I’ll start out by admitting that I’m not fond of self-help books, and I have no interest in books about investing. And I often roll my eyes when I see multiple authors since the mix often is stilted and, at times, creates a bit of literary tug of war. Finally, I wasn’t sure how Susan’s chess knowledge would mesh with Goldstein’s investment knowhow. How could such apparently divergent things compliment each other?

I should mention one other thing: Susan is a friend of mine, and I dreaded the possibility that I might not like the book! After a bit of soul searching, I decided that I would be fair and, if it wasn’t to my taste, I would do my job as a reviewer and be honest about it. Fortunately, all my worries turned out to be unnecessary.

I know nothing about investment. But I do know quite a bit about chess, so I started off reading it with a view towards the chess content, while looking at the investment content from a beginner’s eye. I was surprised when the book started out with Susan discussing her move from Hungary to the U.S. It was extremely interesting (I won’t describe it since I don’t want to ruin a surprising moment or two) and I was impressed when she ended it with, “What if I made a mistake?” It was a brilliant connection to not only mistakes in life, but also in the way a person deals with one’s finances. And so, we were off to the races!

There followed Goldstein, who explained why chess and investing connects in more ways than one might imagine. He also discussed a thing known as “loss aversion,” which actually made perfect sense to me – I could see how this would be helpful to a lot of people.

And so the tone of the book was clear: Goldstein would deal with the heavy hitting investment theory & practice, while Susan mixed chess information, stories, similes, and metaphors to, once again, show that chess and money we’re not complete strangers.

There is a lot of information in this book. The chess material always kept my interest and, shockingly, the investment information also was never boring and, indeed, it sometimes was downright exciting! This was achieved by having two authors who knew their stuff on a world-class level, while also having two authors that wrote in an incredibly clear manner – these two know how to share their knowledge, and it showed on every page.

As a writer, I prize the mix of knowledge and clarity above all other things, and the material from both authors seamlessly complimented each other’s work. Both Susan’s and Goldstein’s prose was exceptionally smooth and enjoyable. Perhaps the biggest surprise though, was the humor. A very nice cartoon-icon version of Susan let you know when her material was taking center stage. Oddly, the cartoon also helped make her stuff more human and personal. I don’t know how they pulled this off, but that’s the effect it had on me. Cartoon-icon Knights were used to let you know when a “Rich As A King Action Point” was offered, and a Douglas Goldstein cartoon-icon appeared when he was discussing some personal story.

I also loved the full-blown cartoon strips that appeared when both Susan and Goldstein were together. These ranged from one to three frames, and all of them were very well done.

I found this book to be absolutely delightful, and extremely well done. I give it my highest recommendation if you are interested in investment strategy, are an adult beginning chess player and want to see chess material that you won’t find in chess books, or if you are a Susan Polgar fan.

Combines two of my great passions!

I will admit it. I am jealous! I have the Certified Financial Planner (r) credential like co-author Douglas Goldstein and I am a chess lover. It would have been great to have the opportunity to work alongside Susan Polgar to develop a book like this. I am always seeking to find ways to educate clients about financial matters and this one is full of great ideas and examples. A bit repetitive on the financial side but a great job of exploring the basics of financial planning and chess strategy and demonstrating the commonalities. I enjoyed the many references to classic comments by grandmasters and historical games and well as Susan's insights into tournament play. Frankly, I do not know how well this book will resonate with those who have little interest in chess but for me it is a winner. Interesting website to compliment the book as well.

If I could, I would give this book more than 5 stars. It’s chock-full of helpful information, very well written, often entertaining, and exceptionally creative in both format and concept. The similarities between chess strategies and investment strategies are fascinating. Even a rank amateur in both areas can learn a great deal from seeing how the strategies can be applied from one to the other.

Both authors are educators as well as experts in their fields. Indeed, Goldstein says he views himself primarily as a “financial educator”. This quality is eminently apparent in the clear, interesting way he explains the world of investing. No prior knowledge is required to understand what often seems formidably complicated to the inexperienced investor. At the same time, more savvy investors can benefit from the strategic approach he advocates for successful investing.

An especially engaging feature of this book are the quotations from a varied range of people – from Michelangelo and Albert Einstein to Mick Jagger and Yogi Berra, with a smattering of chess grandmasters in between. Wise and often humorous, these quotations are invariably apt and useful in directing the reader to the points about to be made.

The autobiographical touches provided by both authors are not only interesting in themselves but they also contribute to the impression that Douglas Goldstein and Susan Polgar genuinely care about their readers and want them to succeed as strategic players in the worlds of both chess and investing.

Backed up by a well-constructed, user-friendly and vastly informative website, this book is truly a gem.

This curriculum has worked really well for my daughter this year for first grade as a homeschooler. This book has a reading support assignment for each lesson in the textbook. The worksheets have really reinforced what my daughter has learned about in the text. If you want to use this curriculum for first grade, then I would recommend purchasing the text, this book, and the assessment book (if you want to give the tests). This book and the text really are enough to do the basic curriculum. There is also a teacher resource and a lab book, but we haven't used either this year. At the beginning of the year, I also helped her by answering the questions and writing some of the answers until her handwriting got better (we would discuss them and I would record her answers). The text is wonderful and easy for both parent and student to understand. No answer key is needed. I have the teacher's guides and haven't used them at all this year.
