About the Author
Steven Naifeh and Gregory White Smith are graduates of Harvard Law School. Mr. Naifeh, who has written for art periodicals and has lectured at numerous museums including the National Gallery of Art, studied art history at Princeton and did his graduate work at the Fogg Art Museum of Harvard University. Together they have written many books on art and other subjects, including four New York Times bestsellers. Their biography Jackson Pollock: An American Saga won the Pulitzer Prize and was a finalist for the National Book Award. It also inspired the Academy Award–winning 2000 film Pollock starring Ed Harris and Marcia Gay Harden as well as John Updike’s novel, Seek My Face. Naifeh and Smith have been profiled in The New Yorker, The New York Times, USA Today, and People, and have appeared on 60 Minutes, The Oprah Winfrey Show, Larry King Live, Charlie Rose, and the Today show.

My New Favorite Book EVER

I read biographies almost exclusively. So when I first saw the fascinating "60 Minutes" piece on the new VanGogh biography I thought to myself, why do we need another book on VanGogh? Lots of books, movies, pop songs, dormroom posters - even Starry Night on the start-up screen on my celphone. Haven't we had enough of Vincent Van Gogh? Turns out we haven't. This may not be the first source on Van Gogh that I've ever seen but it is the first time I've ever actually met him.

This book was the fastest, freshest 800 and some pages I've ever read. So often, a biographer forgets that his subject did not LIVE as a subject of a book. (Ok, Washington did, but still...) So we get research, information, quotes, blah blah blah. But in VanGogh: The Life, I could feel Vincent experiencing his life as vividly as I experience my own.

We walk WITH Vincent through his powerful, wrenching life with writing that is immediate, facts that are fresh - even a little surprise about the alleged suicide - told with a psychological accuity that obliterates that tired 'tortured artist' cliche which has passed for VanGogh biography in the past. And you get a bonus master class in art history to boot! All presented with such a complelling, almost novelistic narrative, that Vincent's demise arrives nearly as a tragic surprise. Because you wind up knowing this guy and actually rooting for him. I felt real suspense reading a book about a man whose life was generally known to me. But still you will weep at his deathbed with the only other person who ever cared about him.

Oh... and if you're a fan of grown-up words and luxurious sentences - and I am - then just read this book for the experience of literature. When's the last time you got to do that? A PLUS!!

Another Author's Perspective

As an art history professor and author of a book on Van Gogh, I have spent many years researching the life, motives and actions of Vincent Van Gogh. I am convinced that he was a heroic man. He was a consistent champion of the underdog, and on numerous occasions took blame for the misdeeds of others. The idea that Vincent wanted to protect the boys who accidentally shot him is consistent with his personality. Emotionally and intuitively, Vincent's accidental shooting and his protection of the young boys makes perfect sense, and offers a far more reasonable conclusion to an extraordinary life--one that was from beginning to end selflessly devoted to the Gospel theme of loving another in place of oneself. To Vincent Van Gogh, it was about cherishing daily life in pursuit of eternal salvation, though his path to redemption was uneven and even at times tortured. And perhaps--as Naifeh and Smith have suggested in their book--this act of compassion in shielding those young boys from blame, and in preventing his brother Theo from further undue stress, may well have been a coup de grâce...a final effort to propel himself into the eternal life to which he had long aspired.

In my view, Van Gogh: The Life is a book any serious Van Gogh fan should own for the impressive amount of information that Naifeh and Smith present. For instance, the authors offer the reader a portrait of conventional Dutch social life in the nineteenth century and the complex and conflicted role Vincent played within that era. Other notable features of the book include an astute discussion of the importance of music in Van Gogh's aesthetic formation. Passages of the book are simply beautiful and noteworthy. A systematic framework for more study of his fascinating life has been provided by the almost interrogatory nature of this compilation--not surprising given the background of the authors.

Nonetheless, I recall an admonition that Van Gogh made about information gathering and the artist. Vincent said that it was the task of the artist to emphasize the obvious and eliminate the extraneous. Van Gogh: The Life underplays what is in my estimation crucial in grasping Van Gogh, namely his sacred view of life. This universal view shaped his thought process and as an artist guided his choices of subject matter. Van Gogh loved the uplifting message of forgiveness embodied in the Gospel message of Christ. This appears poignantly in his many overtly religious works which Van Gogh painted in the last months of his life such as: "The Good Samaritan", "The Raising of Lazarus", "The Pieta" and "The Starry Night" of 1889. This was a time in which Vincent said he had a "terrible need for religion."

According to Naifeh and Smith, the light of his faith had been extinguished at the time of this father's death in 1885; Van Gogh's quest for the sacred had effectively ceased. Yet the evidence of Van Gogh's own letters in the ensuing years cannot be dismissed. Treating the sacred dimension of Van Gogh as fundamentally pathological rather than as a universalizing world view strips his art and life of its transcendent meaning and message. My conviction about the role of the sacred in fully understanding Van Gogh is widely shared by other 21st century Van Gogh scholars who are part of a reappraisal of religious themes in art. Notable museum exhibitions have also stressed this concept by displaying the overtly religious works of Van Gogh, Gauguin, Delacroix and many other renowned figures in the canon of a Western art. The sacred embrace that emerges from Van Gogh's art, letters and life outshines his illness, and provides all humanity with eternal hope.

A wonderful synthesis of the life of a genius

My wife and I went to the Van Gogh Museum soon after it opened in 1973. It is still perhaps the most interesting museum we have ever visited. That's because it had--what is today called--a "back story." You can view his paintings in chronological order, against the backdrop of what most would admit is the folklore of Van Gogh.

Based on a decade of research and collaboration with the museum, this book fact-checks and synthesizes those stories into a compelling analysis of how Van Gogh 1) failed in every career endeavor, 2) painfully and begrudgingly gained the respect of other Impressionist painters while selling only one painting, 3) could create masterpieces in hours, and 4) left a decade's worth of work that soon became wildly popular and priceless.

The other comments focus on the circumstances of his death. True, there is little in the book about that, but really his whole life reflected his inability to get along with local townspeople and how gangs of boys tormented the hobo in their midst. The book is absolutely a psychological study of Van Gogh's fears, motivations, hopes and dreams, but the authors also do a wonderful job of showing how all that lead to bizarre behaviors that turned so many against him. One wonders whether he would have discovered a new kind of art without the mental and physical mockery swirling all around him.

This collaboration also suggests the direction that art, history, libraries and museums may be heading in the future. The Van Gogh Museum is now promoting Vincent and Theo's letters on their website so anyone can interpret them and decide for themselves what may have driven such an original artist. With so many resources--drawings, paintings, letters, outside experts--available to them, there's no telling how they may be able to make Van Gogh come to life as new media become available. I can imagine walking past those paintings again with this information projected and playing all around you. In the meantime, Van Gogh: The Life does a wonderful job of suggesting how a sick and obsessed individual could invent a whole new way of seeing the world.

Edit - Added June 23, 2012: Since posting my original review above on Amazon, I've gotten into doing more reading and posting reviews. With a broader appreciation of the reviews now, I came back 6 months later to look at what later reviewers have been saying about Van Gogh: The Life. I wanted to add to my original review on the topic so many have raised since -- Why did the authors treat Van Gogh so badly in their interpretations and analysis?

I too love Van Gogh's art, the way he saw life, and captured his subjects so quickly in such an original way. Some experts have written that people love Van Gogh because he believed in himself, refused to compromise, and only after death was recognized for his genius ... that so many of us want to have greater success in life and be recognized for it and, thus, Van Gogh becomes a symbol and a role model to so many. It strikes me that when people look to role models with reverence as they do Van Gogh, that he's not allowed to be a person who's just not nice. Some have pointed out that he sounds nice in his letters, so how can he not be a good person? In response to this, I would ask how can someone who has a totally original view, who gets no support except from his brother, who never gets positive feedback, who never (except once apparently) sells a painting NOT be a difficult person to live with?

I am also a huge fan of Frank Lloyd Wright for similar reasons. He had an original way of seeing architecture that was organic, growing out of the environment in which it was placed. Wright didn't design buildings and features that looked cool. Rather he came up with treatments that aligned with their surroundings. He simply followed that principle throughout his life to build structures that seem like they just couldn't have been envisioned by anyone at that time. He too never compromised, even though critics and even many of his clients rebelled at his ideas. Unlike Van Gogh, Wright was hugely successful and recognized for his genius probably for 50-60 years of his life. He essentially walked out on his family as he became more successful, he was seen as egomaniacal and his living situation inspired one of his servants to kill a number of people on the compound with an ax. I guess he wasn't such a nice person either. But not being easy to live with doesn't make him any less of a genius.

When the authors and the Van Gogh Museum see the conflict that they've stirred up, they must be delighted to have gotten readers to passionately discuss and react to their artist 120 years later. They've gotten people to speculate about how possible psychological afflictions, substance abuse, creative vision, and life experiences all contributed to his work and legacy. I don't see that as character assassination ... they've provided a dialogue to get people thinking.

This book makes servicing and tuning your own piano a lot easier to do. If you are not a professional piano tuner, you can take care of most of your piano's problems in just a few minutes. The action diagrams are great. I highly recommend this book even if tuning pianos is not your profession.

More Valuable Information Than I Learned in His Course!

I took the Dave Pelz 3 day short-game course a few years ago, and got great benefit from it. As helpful as that was, I found this book to be a big additional assist. It explained the Pelz principles better than the school did, and it also looks like he has learned quite a few things since I took the school. There's a lot to learn about the short game, and it is helpful to have this as a reference. If you don't know if you want to get his videos or attend one of his courses, this is also a good introduction.
I found out about Dave Pelz by accident. I was playing golf one day at La Quinta with a woman who hit one amazing pitch shot after another close to the pin. The rest of her game was below average, so I asked her where she had picked up the pitching game. She told me that she had just finished Dave Pelz's short game school at PGA West and said it had helped her a lot. Remembering that caused me to take the course.
Dave Pelz is the ultimate golf engineer. He measures everything, and that has led to new learning. For example, he has found that 60-65% of all shots occur within 100 yards of the hole. More importantly, "about 80% of the shots golfers lose topar occur within 100 yards." In further measurements, he noticed that the largest errors in missing the target occur with wedges (for amateurs and pros). These misses are usually in distance, rather than left and right variance.
From these observations, Pelz developed a four wedge system with 3 lengths of backswing that will give you much more distance precision with wedges within 100 yards. The reason this important relates to putting. Almost all 2 foot putts are made, but pros only make half of the 10 foot putts (amateurs do worse). Beyond 10 feet, the odds drop way off. This means that if you can get your wedge shot to within 10 feet you have a good chance of finishing the hole in one less stroke.
I still haven't converted to four wedges, but reading the book convinced me that I should. I didn't realize how much scoring I was missing with only 3. I can get the ball to 15 feet most of the time, and then 2 putt. Maybe I'll get that extra wedge today and get a lot closer.
There's a lot of other good information on sand shots, chipping, trouble shots of all kinds (including how to hit the ball out from under water and stay reasonably dry).
You'll need more than this book to really improve though. If you like the book, you should begin doing the drills in the back. I would suggest you also try the videos. If that is all helping, consider the golf school. You will get a lot of individualized diagnosis of your weaknesses and instruction on how to improve. I still refer to the notes I got, and find them helpful. One strength of the book is that it has a measurement exercise in it that you can use to diagnose the weaknesses in your short game, so that you can concentrate on those parts of the book that will help you the most with your practice.
If you are like most golfers, you love to belt the ball. That's great, but I'm sure you've heard the old saying "Drive for show, and putt for dough." This book will add the perspective of the short game as essential to that dough as well. You'll have to give up two long clubs (he makes recommendations) to put those two extra wedges in your bag.
Use this book to overcome your stalled thinking about how to improve your golf game. Despite better equipment and balls and a lot of instruction, the score of the average golfer hasn't improved in the last 30 years. With the Pelz approach that can change.
As much as I liked this book, I liked his new book, Dave Pelz's Putting Bible, even more. I strongly recommend that you read that one as well. You can implement it without attending the Pelz course. These two books are the first two in a planned series of four. I'm looking forward to the rest of them.

Realistic advice for real players

As a graduate engineer and another NASA scientist, I can vouch for the science that lies behind Pelz's book, but I'm sure most potential readers know that Pelz is the real thing in that respect. The book itself impressed me in three ways:
1. It isn't written for scientists, just golfers. He provides all the information you need to make your own game better, but avoids the physics that underlie the advice. Pelz saves that level of science for the journals.
2. This is a textbook, not a teaser. After telling you what you should try to achieve with each type of shot, he goes into the greater detail you start wanting as soon as you actually start to practice a technique. Things like how much difference in roll distance you should expect between a lob wedge, a pitching wedge, and a nine iron for the same pitch distance.
Most "tips" sound good, but leave you wondering why they aren't quite working when you get to the course. Pelz starts you out with the basics of each technique and then follows through with the details you need to really use it on a course.
3. He avoids the "genius" techniques that some folks love to describe. His techniques work for people who are not born artists with a club, and even those of us who lack a spare thirty hours a week to practice the short game. (The amazing number of pros who go to his schools testifies to the value of his advice when you actually do have time to practice.)
This is scoring golf for the rest of us. I'm not Seve, nor are most people. Pelz describes techniques that are more likely to work than not on any given swing because the physics of the swing are in favor of success.
An Excellent book. It should be in the library of any golfer who ever accepts a two-dollar Nassau.

improves short game, terrible to read and weak instructions

The Good:

Peltz introduces a smart and easy system of getting to know 3 distinct (or 6 if you include swings where you are gripping down on the shaft) shooting distances for each wedge in you bag. The system is very useful and gives reproducible results on the course, so the book definitely does gives you an edge training wise. I also liked how he by "scientific" analysis found out how to score better and why the short game is so important (and under rated) - very convincing. I found myself measuring off different wedge shots, putting labels with numbers on the shafts of my wedges (and having fun at it) immediately after reading the book.

The bad:

The book itself is however a terrible read. Peltz stated that he had read a book on learning theory at some stage, but I really wished that he had read a book about communication theory before writing this book. He repeats himself over and over and over and... it gets to a point where it is just not any kind of fun. Even some of the illustrations are repeated at least three times in the book. You constantly go either 'I got it I got it I got it - snap out of it!' or you go 'come on Peltz, get to the f..... point'. He also includes long and detailed annecdotes about how he and his tour friends discovered the facts that he now teaches in the book. This might be great if you are into the semi historical perspectives sitting in front of the fireplace with hot chocolate, but if you buy this book as a reference for improving your short game it just distracts you from the essence.

Another thing annoying me is how he sneaks in this feeling of "Trademark-of-Dave-Peltz-golf-school" all the time. F.ex. your swing plane and grip now becomes the "finesse swing plane" and the "finesse grip" for your "finesse swing" as if he invented the concepts of an upright swingplane and a loose grip for the short game.

The teaching of the mechanics of the short game swing was not very clear (at least for me they weren't). I had hoped for something along the lines of "Ben Hogan's five lessons" where you can feel the words in your body right there from the sofa. The pictures are inconsistent with what is being said. F.ex. he writes 'arms, hips and shoulders move back synchronized - no coiling takes place between shoulders and hip in the finesse swing' and the picture shows a 45 degrees hip turn with a 90 degrees shoulder turn :(

The description of the chip shot is also very weak. I now know where to place the ball, but what to do with the arms relative to hips and shoulders is still not clear.

To conclude:

The book will make you focus more on your short game and most likely result in lower scores if you practice was is being said, but the lessons does not justify a whopping 400 pages - not at all! Also the reading experience is very cumbersome.

The 3 stars reflects the fact that you do get some very useful knowledge from reading the book but also that after going through 400 pages of agonizing repetitions there are still some very fundamental issues about the mechanics that are not completely clear.

Extraordinary in its scope, quality of photos and scholarshi

This botanical work is, quite simply, a classic. The author is the world's authority on his subject, genus Conophytum. Steve Hammer is a natural-born writer and his prose is clear and concise, while also being delightfully witty and informal. For me the most attractive aspect of the book isthe many, many color photographs by John Trager. They make anyone want to grow conophytums! Some plants are photographed to show their rainbow of colors; they are delicious looking.
Yet beyond the wit and color, this is a botanical monograph and will be for many years to come the standard reference on the genus. The book is laid out logically, with chapters devoted to each series within the two sections/subgenera. The early chapters talk about the group's taxonomic history, its cultivation and so forth.
All in all, I not only recommend this book; I urge you to peruse it!

The First and the Best

For those interested in the genus Conophytum this book has to be an absolute must. Although the book is a full blown reference book Hammer's writing style is easy and there is no reason why anyone interested could not read it from cover to cover, rather than just use it a reference tool.

The photographs are superb and the plants almost leap off the page at you. The book is well produced and print and paper quality are excellent. Essential for a book that will be used on a regular basis.

It cannot be faulted and should be in the library of every enthusiast of these beautiful plants.

DDD goes from discussing his childhood, and explains how he knew he was special at an early age. His parents support grounded him in his early youth. We find out how he lost his virginity and was exposed to his peers. From there he discusses his wild streak of sexual adventures fresh out of high school. Recapping his favorite questions and answers, discussing sexuality and acceptance DDD covers the gamut.

Don't worry, all the saucy and steamy stories he hinted at in his AMA are covered and then some. Like that 7-way orgy he briefly detailed amid the torrent of questions during his AMA. Not to mention the hunky straight gym jock who "went gay" and the poor girl who... shall we say, her lady place was a wreck after one time with DDD. It's all in there and more!

Written from first person perspective the narrative is raw, honest and often times gritty. Details are not spared and readers beware, naughty moments are revealed! The next time you see a man on the street with more than an adequate bulge in his jeans, it might just be DDD.

Bummer

DDD needs an experienced coauthor, or at least better editors. His life and experiences are fascinating but the book is a frustrating, clumsy letdown. I read the first two thirds in under an hour. The book starts off promising; while obvious that he isn't a professional writer, he does begin with genuinely touching anecdotes about his parents. The first third of the book goes downhill swiftly, with dull and clumsy storytelling that is still somehow frustratingly brief. There's no "meat" to them, no pun intended. The second third of the book literally reads like a collection of hardcore erotica. To his credit, DDD is much more in his element telling us about his sexcapades. This part of the book could stand on it's own as a collection of erotic short stories. The final third was frankly unbearable. It's just copied and pasted Q&A from reddit and Tumblr. The questions were not only repetitive but most had already been addressed previously in the book.

DD-Disappointing

Like many of you, I read this book because I was curious -- not so much about DDD's sexual exploits, but who he is as a person, and what shaped his world view. Sadly, I was terribly disappointed with Double Header, and I'll explain why I notched it 2-stars...

1. Grammar, spelling, punctuation, and the like. While I am by no means an expert on any of the prior, I am a voracious reader who can, for the most part, glaze past errors when they are intermittent and not overly distracting. The sheer number of them in this book, especially with a list price of $8.00, is unforgivable. It's true: there is no "perfect" book, but if there is a publishing house behind the release of this one (which I will touch on momentarily), they should feel terrible about the product they are passing along to readers and make every effort to correct them ASAP.

2. The lies. I can understand that most books, especially tell-alls, are typically padded for salaciousness, but the lies in this book (and we're talking silly lies without a real point) are so disappointing it forced me to call into question almost all of DDD subsequent claims. In the foreword DDD says that there is a publishing house behind him on this project and that he has signed away all monetary gains from the publication of his story and in turn the publishing house has moved mountains to protect his identity, except when you look on the page for the book, the publisher is listed as DDD Publishing. ::scratches head, raises eyebrows, tilts head, looks sideways::

3. The ludicrousness of DDD's sexual ventures. Okay, whatever. Maybe I'm a prude, maybe I'm a bit too white bread...but there are some stories in this book that just don't pass the sniff test (as a woman, with woman parts, there is one in particular that made me cringe due largely to the perfectly impractical reaction of his female partner). I'll leave out spoilers, for the sake of those buying this book, but if you do read it you'll probably know what I'm talking about...

4. The convenience of the stories (wanted to be anonymous, had passed away, 'I didn't get your name...'). Yes, I did the math. If DDD has been sexually active for 8 years, that's equivalent to engaging a new partner every 2.9 days (roughly); yet he says he doesn't have sex with strangers (despite the stories he shared being about perfect strangers and their encounters...). And of those 1,000 people, not one has come forward to either confirm nor debunk his claims despite the press he's currently getting? He claims this is because he doesn't use the internet, but the internet isn't mutually exclusive, so I find this hard to believe...

The list goes on, but for me, the horse is dead and I'm hanging up my beating tool.

I have my suspicions on DDD...but it all just gut feelings. I think the book is well meaning, and if you can gloss over the errors and if you're not opposed to graphic sexual stories, there is some beauty in message: That 'we' are not tiny freak shows, that 'we' are human beings capable and deserving of love, that 'we' are perfect because of our imperfections. I simply have a hard time believing the messenger, and ergo, for me personally, the message was lost. I wish DDD well on his journey through humanhood and I hope he comes out on the other side of this okay. Call it my gut, but have feeling that after the glow comes the storm, as so happens in cases like this (A Girl's Guide to Homelessness, A Million Little Pieces)... there are a lot of smart people on the internet.

Not for everyone, but I loved it.

First off, I have never read any of DDD's AMA stuff. I found out about this book from a third part on Tumblr, looked like something I would enjoy and I did/do. Still not done, yes you can read it quickly, but I am taking my time to enjoy his sense of humor. He is an inexperienced author, but that is fine, he is telling you about his life and is telling it like a person sitting down with you over coffee. Very personal (VERY PERSONAL..) and very candid. DDD does not hold back and IMO the reader is given something more for it. Not for everyone, not for the prudish, conservative or just unwilling to experience life. DDD lays it all out for you to take or leave with no reservations or apologies. Truly an enjoyable read, wish he would do short stories though...

Believe it or not, orchids — the most glamorous and spectacular flowering plants in the world, nature’s true masterpieces — are easy to grow! You just need to give them what they need. I’ve been growing and blooming orchids in my home for almost 40 years — mostly not in a greenhouse, but under lights or in the windowsill. For dummies.

The title says it all. It is a good starter and you'll learn how to take care of your orchids. The chapter about resources is truly excellent. However, this book won't take you much further from the basics, in my opinion. The colour plates are beautiful, but they are just a handful (8 pages). Black and white pictures don't make much sense here, after all this book is about orchids, right?
In the same price range I strongly recommend "Growing orchids" by Rittershausen, which contains almost the same information of more expensive books, and shows hundreds of colour pictures of very good quality. If you are willing to spend a little more, buy either "Understanding orchids" or "Orchid's grower companion". Here you are paying for the "for Dummies" trademark. This book would be a good buy at half of the price.

A VERY INFORMATIVE AND READABLE WORK.

This is actually a pretty good starter book. There are a vast number of books out there addressing the subjects of growing, identification, history, etc. of these wonderful plants, but for those that just bought their first orchid, or are contemplating such, then this is as good a book to start with as any. Needless to say, no book can do it all for you and as you grow in this wonderful hobby, you will want to check on more of the wonderful resources available. When I first began raising orchids, it was hard to find anything that was meant for the general public, and most orchid books were unreadable (if you could even find them) unless you had a degree on horticulture. I killed off quite a few of these plants in my learning process, still do for that matter, but that is what is so fascinating about this hobby, i.e. there is always so much more to learn.

As with all the idiot books, this one covers your basic informational needs, from selecting a good starter plant on to its care and maintenance. It has humor thrown in here and there, which makes for a pleasing read. Now this in not a "picture book" of orchids nor is it meant to be. Goodness knows there are many high dollar books out there to fulfill this need. I liked this particular work as it does well illustrate that orchids are not as difficult to raise as many feel they are. Yes, some have very specialized needs, but for the most part, the orchids you have access to are not all that difficult if you just know what you are doing. This book gives you that basic knowledge to get you started. It uses simple terms and written in an easy style that does not send you running to the dictionary with every turned page. The illustrations are quite well done.

Now as for this being a book only for beginners, hmmm, I am not quite sure what to say about that. Granted, much of the information found here is basic and the entire work is not written in the dry, academic mode so often found in these works. I am certainly no expert myself, but have been messing with these plants for quite a number of years now, and to be quite frank, I learned a few things myself. Some of the stuff I thought I knew, I did not know. It may be just me, but I have found that as with most things you need to beware of "experts" and their advice. It is nice to hear their opinion, but you always need to check the facts our for yourself and from multiple sources.

I highly recommend this one for beginners and feel that a lot of the "old timers" could probably benefit from giving this one a read.

Great Beginner Orchid Book

As a beginning orchid grower I was a bit intimidated by the whole topic. But after reading Frowine's book, the topic seems much more approachable. I've started with a few moth orchids and they've done well, but now I'm inspired to try some oncidiums and paphiopedilums. I really would like to try some fragrant orchids as well.

I like the straight forward cultural information. It's clear the temperature, humidity, and light levels needed for the various orchids. It gives me a sense of which ones to try and which to wait on. The orchid photos in the center are inspiring, though I'd love to see more!

I also liked the in-depth listing of varieties for the various orchid types. There's a whole world of orchids out there to grow.

A great book for anyone starting out in orchids growing. Clearly written with the usual "dummies" humor and lightness. A good starting point for orchid growing.
