Anatomy book

This book has been absolutely perfect! It goes right along with what we are doing in our class and the pictures are amazing! Being able to see where everything is and then coloring each muscle/vein/artery/nerve to distinguish it is so helpful. Also, the activities at the end of the sections are soo good!

This book has great illustrations and interactive lessons to help you learn. The CD-ROM is excellent as well. It has actual cadaver pictures and videos that provide a real perspective to learn from.

Used but good quality

Item just as expected. The cover is slightly dirty and the pages are somewhat yellowed. I was very surprised and excited when I flipped through the book and saw that there was no writing on the pages! I took a chance and bought this used rather than brand new and my chance paid off! I saved $40 by buying this used and am so happy I did.

About the Author
Joseph P. Helak is a physician who practices emergency medicine in west Texas. He is also an instrument rated private pilot with a degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Arizona. His diverse experiences include working in Mission Control Center at NASA, Johnson Space Center, during the initial flights of the Space Shuttle, and flying in fighter jets, as a flight surgeon, for the New Mexico Air National Guard. His hobbies include travelling the countryside in his motor home, practicing jiu jitsu, and spending time with his six children and three grandchildren (which he swears takes more energy and is more rewarding than anything mentioned above). He currently resides in Lubbock, Texas, with his wife Buffey and their two youngest daughters.

The Methuselah Strain has the makings of a best seller! It is the perfect blend of suspense and science. It is a quick read that flows through your mind like you are watching it on a movie screen. A definite read!

Mixture of Science and Action Thriller

I was hooked within the first few pages when the puzzle of a young bewildered woman within the shell of an old woman's body and mind is introduced. At that point, I want to put the puzzle together and with the efforts of a professional skeptic, the puzzle comes together.

J.P. Helak has done a masterful job in making me care about the characters, good and bad. He mixes human emotion, science, political intrigue and hunger for power in a manner that brings the story a satisfying conclusion.

I eagerly look forward to his next effort.

Excellent read

If I didn't know, I would not think this a first novel. The author sets the scenes for the dialog perfectly. I can see everything in my mind. It is more like watching a movie than reading a book. The dialog, while technical in many places, is crisp. Never verbose and never boring. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves techno-thrillers. I am looking forward to more from this author.

Astounding.

Dating is not a simple manner, at least for a handful of people that is. I could say I'm included on the list but still can manage though, still this great short read of a book is an outstanding help in my opinion. It pointed out tips to building inner confidence and putting yourself out there to try new experiences, which is quite enjoyable if you ask me. And has a lot of good info gathered by the author. It is very difficult to find a true lover specially in these days where we have lots of other things are also involved like a nice house, career etc. In short people changed their values even when you're choosing your life partner. Anyways, this book is based on such a nice and comprehensive content but more importantly I like the way Lisa explain in this book because telling is nothing but if telling in easiest way will make worth so it would make easiness to the reader to read and understand every single point.

Along with this, I found this book useful and helpful for me and I have learned a lot from this book and increased my knowledge as well. Although, I'm married and already found a perfect match for me but with this book's content I hope I can make our relationship more better.

This book in it's fourth edition is better suited as a historical look at architectural drawings. It is strongly lacking in CAD production standards; some of the other standards and terminologies mentioned are outdated and do not reflect a concensus of how we professionals practice; a lot of the graphics used are poor quality and are difficult to read.

A must have for someone who is seeking the origins of knowledge!

I had to buy the book for a college philosophy course on the study of ancient and medieval philosophy. It's a great introductory read for anyone who's looking to study the origin of modern thought. The diversity of the book is rather extensive for the time period it aims to cover. It has a great layout and the chronological order of texts is very concise and clear. I also like that it included the Socratic dialogues by Plato in their entirety, along with many other of his famous works which include a full version of his "Republic." All in all, a great book and great buy for the price. It was also shipped to me very quickly (less than 3 business days.) Enjoy!

I had never read anything on philosophy and this book was for an intro course. Did a good job with the simple explanations of some more difficult readings. While you would want to make your own conclusions about some of the readings (given how many can be interpreted in different ways) this is a good stepping stone into philosophy.

Permutations of a Confusion?

When A. R. Radcliffe-Brown wrote that “social anthropology. . . [is] the comparative theoretical study of forms of social life amongst primitive peoples” (1952:4), he could invoke the authority of over a century of anthropological research dedicated examining the kinship institutions and marriage patterns of primitive societies. Adam Kuper’s The Invention of Primitive Society: Transformations of an Illusion (1988) is an historical account of how the idea of primitive society was conjured first in the minds of Maine, Tylor and Morgan, and remained at the forefront of anthropological research for over a century. Kuper’s position is that primitive society is an illusion, “something which does not and has never existed,” yet persisted in the minds of anthropologists because it was “good to think with” (1988:8-9). Kuper seeks to account not only for the genesis, but the persistence of the idea of primitive society. How did the idea of primitive society, often at odds with ethnographic data and the basic tenants of evolutionary theory, manage to persist for so long? To answer this question, Kuper engages the analytical tools offered by the history of science, as well as his own discipline, anthropology. Kuper draws on the work of I. Bernard Cohen, who argued that fields of scientific inquiry tend to undergo subtle and prolonged transformations, rather that wholesale paradigm shifts, as Thomas Kuhn had argued. To study such transformations, Kuper draws on Lévi-Strauss’ research on the transmission of myth. Myth, argued Lévi-Strauss, was a reflection of the innate cognitive structures of the human mind. The logic underlying primitive myth and modern scientific thought were, according to Lévi-Strauss, essentially the same: “the kind of logic which is used by mythical thought is as rigorous as that of modern science, and that the difference lies not in the quality of the intellectual process, but in the nature of the things to which it is applied” (1955:444). Kuper’s study of primitive society proceed in essentially that same way that Lévi-Strauss argued that a study of myth should proceed: the different models of primitive society advanced throughout the history of anthropological thought all represent transformations of a single structure – the constituent elements must be identified and their arrangement into new forms traced through time. Kuper’s book proceeds chronologically, and is divided into two sections. The first deals with what might called the classical period, and is concerned with the development of the idea of primitive society in the writings of Maine and Morgan, and the modification of the model by their later contemporaries. The second section traces the transformation of primitive society as conceived by academic anthropologists in the twentieth century. In the modern period, Kuper briefly traces how the idea of primitive society was received by Boas and his students in America before turning to the practical application of the theory in Australia and Africa by British social anthropologists. The dichotomy between kinship social organization and the territorially-based organization of the modern state, as well as a concern with the relationship between the nuclear family and the tribe unite Kuper’s analysis of the classical and modern conceptions of primitive society.
